Looking for some input on the Borgenson shaft . Have a 97 3500 has a clunking in steering wheel . What is the install like and are they a direct match? Thanks RJ

You might want to go through the archives on this. As I remember, most were not as impressed with it as a true 'fix' of the problem, esp. given the cost.

I'd bet the source of the clunk is from a worn track bar (assuming this is a 4x4, as you didn't say either way. ) I felt mine through the steering wheel when turning say into a driveway over a bump. Also some years, maybe the '97s (can't remember) had a TSB on this issue that centered around the shaft bearings in the cab. Again, I'm not 100% on this, maybe someone else can give more detail.

You can check the steering shaft by grabbing it and yanking, also watch it at the u-joint as someone inside is moving the wheel right to left. If it is ok, fire up the truck and have your helper do the same as you look at the track bar ball joint. I could visibly see the play in mine, and that was only after 20k miles.

If it is the track bar, upgrade to a DT or Lindstat to eliminate the problem.

Hope this helps.

steering shaft

Thanks for the info. It is a 97 2 WD 3500. I can get it to clunk by grabing the shaft and side to side movement. Should I look any further? Took a quick look underneath and didnt see anything suspect. Did grease the fittings . Thanks RJ

Good News

RJ2,

I replaced my shaft on my 1-Ton dump and it was easily the best money spent on that truck. Install was fairly simple and straight forward. Although my trucks are older then yours, it is most likely the same deal. Just do it, I have two trucks , and now my pick-up feels like trash. Installation took about two hours, but my brain was out to lunch on one part which cost me time.

Good Luck

Seems there was a post recently about Borgenson and how terrbile their customer service is. I will not buy Borgenson products because of the few members that posted with their bad experiences with them.

As far as the "clunk" I agree, check the trackbar.
