Borgeson double-u on 91.5

Has anyone put a double-u on a 91. 5 before? Will I run into problems with the rag joint?

The upper U-joint replaces the rag.

My son put a double U-joint Borgeson in his truck> I have the single. The only thing you will need to do is remove the rag joint bracket so the upper joint can go on.

NOTE: Make darn sure you put a flat on the shaft for the set pin to come up against. If, for some strange reason it were to ever come loose, it would really suck to have it fall off on the freeway doing 70. Not saying that will happen, nor have I heard of it happening, I'm just careful.

The difference between the single and the double in handling is not noticeable.

You do feel more vibration through the wheel with the double. The purpose of the rag joint is to isolate said vibration from the upper steering shaft.

I think the rag joint also helps in wrecks. I think the rag joint is the intended weak point so it breaks rather than sending the steering column thru your body.

but steers 100% better

I doubt it will help much. The shaft is straight and the hardware will keep it straight. It's gonna come right at us. We'll be shishkabobs.

Bet nobody thought of that when we ranked the gens the past couple of days.

I replaced the rag joint. Felt no difference in vibration while driving. With the new shaft, it was a night and day difference.



Anything big enough to hit you and push the shaft through the passenger compartment is going to give you more to worry about than just a little hole in your chest.

- Agreed. Get the double joint and enjoy the increase in performance. Anything that hits a 1st gen will probably lose.

My comments was based on steering shaft/column improvements in the mid-1960's designed to eliminate some of the "spear of death" problems where shafts had a tendancy to propell themselves like a spear into driver's lungs and things like that. Maybe its just one of those things like seat belts that don't really help all that much... at least not when you have a 1,000 pound motor in front of you

I couldn't easily get the rag joint bracket off the shaft without breaking something so I went with the single joint shaft and a new rag joint. If this one lasts another 14 years, I will be happy with it. My 01. 5 has a stock double joint shaft and I don't feel any noticeable road vibration.

That's because it's isolated in another way. It's a different animal than the 1st gen.
