what a pos. they KNOW their set screw is 90degrees off. say nothing about it in the destructions. so, i will spend my money with flaming river next time.....

if you haven't put in a borgeson yet. have fun lining up that steering wheel!!

Man, that sucks! (I also just read your posts/thread in the 2nd Gen forum too).

I too have been contemplating the purchase of a new steering shaft. As I have read of deficiencies with the Borgeson unit and their legendary, installation instructions and lousy customer service, I was getting close to ordering the Flaming River counterpart. Then I read where someone on here was unhappy with them as well.

Can't anyone make a decent friggin steering shaft...

that installs as it should

that comes with good installation instructions

that works better than the "low bid" POS from Dodge

that has excellent customer service (like PDR... to name but one fine vendor)

that will not rust after installation (actually, Flaming River has an optional plating operation available... this will reduce or eliminate the corrosion problem)

that won't void your steering shaft warranty if you decide to paint the unit (as I'm told Borgeson will... how stupid is that anyway?)

I mean, we're not talking about rocket science here!

BTW shendren, please keep us updated if the situation improves (or deteriorates).

I installed a Flaming River shaft instead of a Borgeson after reading an old post about Borgeson voiding a warrantee on a shaft because the owner painted it to keep it from rusting so bad. When I ordered mine FR wanted to know how long to make it, I told them it was a stock truck, cut it to fit a stock truck. It works fine and it plated so no rust.

Thanks for the update on Flaming River Extreme1.

Q: Do you feel that the Flaming River steering shaft corrected your steering deficiencies?

Mine or the trucks?!?

Yes, it did tighten up the steering. The next item to wear and get replaced was the steering box. The replacement (a reman from Autozone) is now loose and will get replaced shortly. I will also be installing a bearing below the box. They really need the support there. I fixed the trac bar a year before the steering shaft.

I don't know if the older trucks are different, but the gearbox shaft on my 2001 has a splined section on the end with a flat spot for the set screw on one side and a groove that goes all the way around just beyond the splined part (about 1/2" from the end). The Borgeson shaft set screw was 90 deg. off in relation to the flat spot but fit nicely into the groove and still left plenty of clearance between the u-joint and the end of the output shaft. It seems to me that the set screw is more secure in a groove than against a flat spot so I had no problem with the fact that the Borgeson was off. Also, I held my steering wheel in place with bungee cords and left the output shaft alone. This way the relationship of the steering wheel to the wheels does not change. Simple 45 minute install. The only complaint I have about this shaft is that it seems to rust instantly. Only surface rust, but for $255 I would like for it to look as good as it did when I unwrapped it for more than one day.

Borgeson Customer Service ? ?

#@$%! Had mine installed by a mechanic about 2 years ago, mostly good results till now. Hit a bad chuckhole going slow under 3 mph . Shaft came completely off at the spline by the firewall. Upon inspection I discovered the shaft slip joint could not move at all from buildup of rust and corrosion that had gotten past the boot. Relubed and back together, decided to call the company to discuss ways to insure this problem did not recur (like at 60 mph). Person on phone was polite but not knowledgable. Asked to speak with someone who could help me work thru it. They came back with "We can sell you a new one for $75 shaft and $15 boot. If the tube slidder would have moved the way it was designed to do the lockscrew would have held on. I asked the person I was dealing with to relay my discontent to some person in authority that would care what a customer thought, the reply was put it in an email to the sales dept. Told them I have no complaint with the sales dept. my concern is customer service. I have 250k on this unit and feel it is a good probuct but as of now am not happy with customer service.

Yep, that 90 degrees off sucked, and after three years the darn thing was so rusted I had to cut it to put on the Rock Solid bushing. Of course I wasn't about o spend close to $300 for a new one just to rust up agian, so I went with a stocker.

Ya know, they have beefed it up, seems almost as tight as the Borgenson one, and about half the cost. OF course, I had to re center my steering wheel, but it's working great.

pics anyone

does anyone have any pics of how bad the rust is your talking about. I just saw in LMCtruck they have replacements dont know what brand I will look later as well on the flamriver brand.
