I’m about to replace my power steering pump because I’m losing steering and brake functionality at low rpms. Works fine at anything over 1000 rpms. I guess since both are affected, it’s reasonable to assume the pump is going out? I bought a Borgeson unit which increases the pressure and flow over stock specs. It’s now occurring to me that the increase in pressure could cause an issue with a seal or something somewhere else. Has anyone had any problems with their hydroboost after going with the higher pressure steering pump? Thanks for any feedback.

Yeah I saw a youtube video along those lines and I probably should have looked into that first, but I have the parts already and I’ve pulled the vacuum pump and power steering pump. I was going to pull the screen/check valve and take a look but haven’t had time yet. Turns out the vac pump drive coupler was on borrowed time and pump wasn’t in good shape either so I’m going with a replacement from Gould Gear.. Pete is awesome if anyone needs a vacuum pump, seal kit, or any parts to do with the vacuum pump. Anyway, it’s good I guess that I got in that far and found those other issues..

Still concerned about the increased pressure from the Borgeson pump and whether it will have any negative effect with regard to the hydroboost/seals, etc.

I've been running a Borg pump for years and a few hundred thousand miles. No issues.
One thing I did notice was that the shorter return line looked a little restricted from the bend in it, more so than the stock one does.. that’s the one usually connected to the return from the hydroboost.. I read that any slight restriction in that return line can fool the hydroboost into thinking you’re applying the brakes. Do you recall if your return port looked a little pinched on your Borg pump when you got it?

It is a non-pressurized line. So what happens if the hydroboost is fooled into thinking you are applying the brakes? I don't even know if that is possible.

Absolutely, just pinch the return hose with pliers and you'll see that it applies the brakes by itself.

I researched that whole topic very thoroughly before I installed the PS filter system in mine.
I'd have loved to have the hydroboost return before the filter but even this slight restriction seems to be to much, so it needs to go back to the Reservoir unfiltered.

The Borgeson power steering pump operates at about 100 psi higher maximum pressure than the OEM power steering pump - that is about 7%. I don't think it will be detrimental to the other components in the system.

I agree. However, OP, It might not hurt to go ahead and do a seal kit in the hydroboost. It is not hard and they do go bad with high mileage/heat cycles. I did mine at about 320k.

Yes… that would be a good idea while already into it.. I didn’t think about it though and now it’s all back together and working well. Can’t believe how hot those pressure lines connected to the hydroboost get though.

So were you able to remove and re-seal the hydroboost unit without having to go up under the dash for anything?
