My TDR searches have revealed previous discussions concerning the Borgeson steering shaft as a fix for the dreaded steering "clunk. " Where can I get one and how much do they run pricewise? Ease of installation? The general consensus from I've read in previous posts is that the Borgeson shaft fixes the problem very nicely.

I'm pretty sure that the steering shaft on my rig is responsible for the occasional "clunk" as I can grab the shaft and produce an amazing amount of side to side play in the shaft assembly. The "U" joint at the firewall end of the shaft seems to be the worst offender.

And here I thought that Dodge had gone away from zinc alloy "U" joints. #ad

What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about?

NETim,

I installed the Borgeson Steering shaft about 2 years ago. Installation not too bad. Lots of good info in the archives. Search under Borgeson. Note my tech tips.

Most or All of the "clunk" will be gone w/ the Borgeson. On hot days, sometimes a get a slight clunking noise. This must be in the column somewhere. Seems to be a common charactoristic of the Dodge steering.

Good Borgeson tech & Pictures here: http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/~dfritz/technical/STEERING/borgeson/shaft_replace.html

There is another company called Flaming River Industries that makes steering shafts. I just saw their ad when I was thumbing through Off-Road magazine at the grocery store. Their ad said "Dodge". Might be worth checking out. See http://www.flaming-river.com .

My 97 had the "clunk"at about 80,000 miles or so. The U-joints felt OK, but I could feel just a little play in the steering box end of the shaft. I Went to the Dodge dealer, & they had a new one in stock. It was a little different than the one on my truck, but they told me they had upgraded the Part #, and the replacement is now the same as the one used on later model trucks. I've had no more problems with it so far, and it cost about $85 plus tax. If it lasts as long as a $250 Borgensen, It's a cheaper fix... ... . DDG

I have the same rattling feeling in the steering column on hot days. I've had steering related problems since day 1 with my '97 4x4 diesel ram. My truck was purchased brand new. I have been thru the arbitration process with now avail. Everyone from DC that has driven my truck has said that this is normal - that's the way the truck drives. My truck is all over the road, the front end has been checked 2 dozen times by lifting the front wheels and checking for play. This way of testing does not and will not compensate for the weight of the truck. I performed an interesting check with my son last Sunday - with the engine running, I got under the truck and had my son turn the steering wheel rapidly from left to right and BINGO, you talk about play in the front end - all the ball joints on the steering components moved in and out... particularly on the pitman arm ball joint and track bar ball joint. This, I conclude, is where the play and rattling is coming from. I am in the process of replacing these parts. These same parts were said to be fine by DC.
