My alternator has over 200K, so my plan was to freshen it up with new bearings and brushes. When I got it apart, I found the brushes to be about worn out, so it is ready. The slip rings are worn pretty bad, too. Are they replaceable? I don't have a rebuilder close by, or would try that route. Thanks for any help.

I'm in the same boat, my truck has 125,000 miles and the slip ring is grooved badly. I have the alt. apart in my garage right now, so guess I will call a electrical rebuilding shop I know and (got the new brushes from) see if the slip ring is available. I'm not holding out much hope, I'm seeing a rebuilt alt. in my future.

CKelley1,

I have that kit. The problem is the copper slip rings (That's what I have always heard them called) on the shaft where the brushes ride. They are worn pretty deep and that's what I want to replace.

I think you can take`em to a machine shop and have the slip rings turned down and polished. no reason to replace`em.

i missed that part. we chuck ours in a lathe and use emery cloth or very fine sandpaper to polish it. many years ago i just chucked the armature in a drill and did it. if there are deep groves use a small stone for sharpening knives before the cloth.

I called the alternator repair shop last night and told the owner I'd be over this morning. When I got there, he had already built me an armature and just traded me for my old one. He said mine would not have gone too much farther and would have worn through the slip rings. If that happened, he said it might still charge intermittently. Total cost for his part was $20. The kit from Geno's was $34. 99. Not bad for 200,000 miles.

Bslayer do you know how much wear your slip ring had, mine has . 025 wear groove, I was just wondering how much life might be left in mine? The alt. shop I found want 70$ just to replace slip ring, by the time I get bearings, brushes, I will have as much as a rebuilt alt. into it.
