Bosch injector pump endplay question

Just had the pump on my 93 dodge cummins rebuilt and on installaton was doing some checking. The pump has . 015 inch endplay not turning, and when rolling the engine over,the shaft and pump gear move in and out about . 025 inch at around each cylinder pulse. Is this normal ? Some of you may remember, I have had 3 thrust bearing failures in this truck, and am just taking some extra precautionary checks to hopefully keep this from happening again. Any input on this?

Scott, there is some endplay to be expected... . I'll check tomorrow with our pump shop and see if they have a "spec" for that.

Also, keep in mind that the play will vary a bit depending on which way you're turning the engine over... as I recall they are helical cut gears in there and they tend to want to "walk away" from each other as you rotate.

As long as you have the pump firmly mounted to the gear housing and the nuts are tight you should not have any pump "body" movement which could create some confusion.



If someone has an accurate "spec" for these readings jump in here.

edit: BTW Scott did you have any tweaking done or is it a "stock" install for warranty purposes down the road???

The shop I had the pump rebuilt at said this is normal. Just wanted another opinion. The engine is pretty much stock, couldn't aford to do any tweaking. I have 2 hopped up cars,if I spent money hopping up my truck, my wife would probably divorce me. But I did think about the idea. It would be fun to give my friends powersmoke a run for the money. Ok Scott,,,,I spoke to our pump specialist on this one yesterday afternoon... .



Here is what he said... and I quote..... the maximum allowable play is . 009" that's nine thousandths of an inch... any more and it is out of spec... the allowable is to take into account the clearances needed to run this type/style of pump... .

Aw crap. I just talked to two pump shops and they both said my end play is normal. I already installed it too. This darn engine has been a real hemeroid it seems, eveything about it. Now I just don't no what to do. The local shops must not know what they are doing. Thanks for the info. It just didn't make my day.

Ok, if it's in the truck then run it like normal... . if you have any issues you've obviously made a precedent in regards to "concern/questions" about the play/tolerances and you should have a good firm ground for "come back" if you have any trouble.



I'd say just bolt 'er down and have some fun with it... .

If it were me and, this is the situation I was in, I'd just go for it bud... .



Keep in mind that almost all "specs and settings" have an "accetpable range/band" for assembly and operation I'm sure you'll be ok...

I guess I'll just have to run her. The shops around here seem to think its ok. Seems like alot of play to me though. But this is the only bosh pump I've had anything to do with. Thanks for the info.
