Bought '04 GTO

Bought my wife an '04 Pontiac GTO yesterday, never looked at them before -saw this one and took it home. The car is awesome, I almost bought a new Mustang, luckily I found this car (only has 3,900 miles on it).



The LS1 slap hauls ace, very nice on the road, but it's an auto - wife can't drive a stick. Other than the car looking looking almost identical to a Grand Am, making it a serious sleeper, I am in love with this car. I'm 6'4" and can fit very comfortably in the car, I spent 6 hours driving it home without a cramp.



Anybody else who has one, let me know, so you can educate me on the countless things I don't know about this car.

Foreign markets (like Australia) have had 'em for years... so they're VERY well supported in the aftermarket.

My buddy has a '05, pretty nice car, I have driven it quite a bit, turn the TC off and it is a real handful, the '05 has the LS2 which is 400hp his is also a 6 speed.

The only things I do not like are no sunroof, the hood scoops, and it looks like some of Pontiac's lower model cars, it does not stand out in any way. If you get an exhaust for it do not get the spin-tech, the drone is unreal, makes the car undrivable on the highway.

A guy had one about 6 months ago at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix. The car looked like an average everyday driver till I got a sneak peak under the hood. He ran just under 130mph in the 1/4 mile.

Dang! He must have had a big nitrous nozzle bolted to that thing... or some sort of forced induction. With that mph and really good traction, that's an easy high 10-second pass.

Ya, when he noticed me lookin under the hood, he slammed it shut. All I really saw was a super charger and air intake before he closed the curtain. It was a total sleeper. Looked completely stock from outside appearance. There was also a newer Mustang that looked completely stock. Till he blew everyones eardrums while pulling off a 133mph 1/4 mile. They sent him home, too fast for the judges.

I'm a Pontiac man too, it's just too bad the GM/Pontiac engineer didn't listen to the test groups when they were asking for feedback. Almost every one of the people they spoke to about the car said it was nice and handled well and had lots of power. When asked if they would buy it they said no. Why asked the young engineer. Because it's not a GTO. He said they weren't going to offer a retro car but a NEW GTO with single exhaust and no hood scoop. What happens mid year? Add on kits to put dual exhaust on it and a stick on scoops. Maybe if they would have built a GTO then they wouldn't have to cancel the model and would have beat Ford at it's own game. But hey what do I know I've only owned a GTO for 26 years, my FIL for 41 years and his cousin has had 2 of them for 35 years. Just my . 02 but evidentally more have spent the same . 02

I got walked by an LS2 GTO with a turbo kit.



The only race i've ever lost on the street with my 02. That car was fast!

What is a good exhaust? I don't want something too loud (it is the wife's car), but I would like something deeper and louder than the stock exhaust.

Talked to my buddy, he said Corsa is the way to go. The Corsa's I have seen have been very nice but pretty pricey.

I have had good luck with Borla on LT1 Camaros and vettes so maybe check with them as well.

Thanks for the info, putting mufflers on cars is kind of new to me, my experience primarily has been chopping them off trucks.



Off the topic of mufflers - the dang oil changes on this car cost more than my truck, Mobile 1 is not cheap stuff. Fortunately my father-in-law has a commercial account at a local parts shop, at least saved me 20 bucks on the oil and filter.
