I just bought a 600 and I wasn't impressed with the low end torque. My old 97 would accelerate from 50 MPH straight up an 8% grade with ease, but the 600 will bog down making me downshift. What is the best mod to increase the low end torque? Those of you who have straight pipes, have you noticed better response at lower RPM's?

I also don't like th lag when starting in 2nd. It just seems like a pig until that RPM hits about 1,800. Any ideas?

When I cut the cat off and replaced the muffler with something straight through it helped out. When I rpl the intake with an AFE and torque tube it helped more than you would think. With just those two things done I feel that the truck has pretty good power "stock". I'm comparing it to my Dmax I had when it was stock.

Hey Turboost

How loud is that with the torque tube? Am looking at the same set-up. What did you put in place of your cat and which muff did you install? I plan on the afe but havnt decided on tube yet.

The torque itself does increase the intake noise. You can hear it in the cab with the windows up. I noticed more responsivness with the torque tube and stock airbox so it does give some improvement I believe.

I just put a piece of pipe where the cat was and some generic glasspack. I have no drone, fairly quiet at idle, and sounds like a jet when getting on it. If you don't mind a box then just about any will make quite a difference.

Have you ran the afe with stock tube? Do you regret the noise of the tube? Also do you tow? That is when things get noisy.

I added the tube and a week later added the AFE box. I love how loud it is, its comparable to a 6. 0 Ford in turbo noise, which I like. I haven't pulled heavy with it, just a 2500lb load, but with this small load I could tell it was louder so with a big load I imagine it will be quite noticeable.

I will add that when I added the torque tube to the stock air box it pulled the filter minder down to about 60%, that tells me the TT does increase airflow and that the box is a big restriction.

My 97 wasn't stock, but when it was, it still had better low end torque. As I recall, peak torque was at 1400 RPM and now its 1800 RPM.

Wrong. Peak torque is now at 1600 rpm, and there's no way your stock '97 pulled better than a correctly running 600. There's plenty of difference between my '02 and '04. 5 (I know, it's not a '97).

Hey Mr. Know it all. When did you drive my trucks? Please do tell how you would know when the peak torque occurs in either of my trucks. And don't tell me thats what Cummins rates it as, because many factors change when an engine reaches peak torque. If you knew anything about these engines, you would know this.

Woah!

Calm down guys! We're all on the same side here. ;)

I will say it again, if you're '97 truly had more torque (regardless of 200 rpm), then I believe your 600 has a problem with it. The 12V torque peak came on sooner, but at 440 ft lbs? vs. 600 ft lbs. Of course, the 12V torque curve was way "peakier", so it is often said that they felt they had more torque than later motors. Dyno's say differently. The later motors with a flatter curve don't have a big "hit" and so feel less powerful. Yes, I have driven several 12V's, including a stock '97.

Please don't get mad at me! Just trying to figure out if your 600 is running right.

You need to reread my posts. I never said my 97 had more torque, I said it had better low end torque.

I reread your posts as you so kindly suggested and based on the above statement, if your having problems accelerating at highway speeds uphill with your 600 compared to a stock '97, there's something wrong with your new truck.

Have a nice day

Must be a problem with all the 600's I have driven because they all lacked the low end torque my 97 had. I am glad you are on the board because there must be 1,000's of us 600 owners that don't know there is something wrong with our trucks.

I never said I did. Please tell me where I even hinted that I know anything about your truck? You think you know somehting about mine which you don't, and now you think I suggested I know something about yours? You must be one of the lucky ones without a problem, or you have no clue what you are talking about, or both.

They’re coming to take me away ha ha…They’re coming to take me away!
