Well I bought a Hx40 compressor wheel and housing brand new on ebay. It is supposed to bolt right on my stock Hx35 and give me better flow & cfm and keep the nice spool up of my 12cm hx35 exhaust side. It cost me $207 with shipping. I'm not sure how this compares with shipping my turbo to Piers and having him upgrade it. Any body else done this? He claims all components are balanced individually so it should come out balanced pretty well. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&showtutorial=0&ed=0&t=0&indexurl=0&item=1843155875&r=0&rd=1#BID1

You have to get the parts balanced as an assembly too. Poor assembly balance from the factory is a major cause for failure of the HX40s at high boost in b. o. m. b. ed trucks.

I'm evaluating turbo options and I just discussed this with Al at PDR this past Friday. I'm pretty sure he said they charge $175 (parts & labor) plus shipping if you send them your HX-35 tubo for Piersification. He said they also balance them to a considerably higher tolerance than Holset does.

If the turbo needs rebuilding (bearings and seals), it's another $150.

I'd take the parts to a Bosch or Holset certified (they are usually both) service place to have the parts switched. While you're there, get the assembly balanced, it's cheap insurance.

You still might come out OK, complete turbos aren't exactly cheap to ship.

Edit: Al also said to run a 16 housing to get max EGT reduction.

I've considered sending Piers my turbo. One concern; how long is the turnaround. With the possibility that customs may delay things at the border, well, that makes me nervous.

I'd hate to be down for weeks, rather than just a few days. This time of year, that would be a very bad thing.

We figured about 2 weeks from shipping to recieving. Of course, holidays (Canadian too, eh?), shipping blunders, etc could conspire to make it longer.

I recommend calling them for details and probably setting up a specific time to do it.

I had Piers just re-worked my HX40. It took about 3 weeks. He said he is VERY busy. You ship it to Washington State, and it has a return address from Washington. This saves aggravation.

Forrest,

16cm

I have not put my foot into it yet, but around town about a 50º reduction.

The best part about it is now it should be reliabable. I won't worry when I romp on it.

It's about $150 to have Piers re-work your HX40 to PDR specs. If you need new parts, it's more.

Get it done. :)

Mountain West Turbo who I got my HX40 compressor side from says my balance will come out better with the new parts because they are balanced better individually than they were before. He also says the turbine wheel and shaft are balanced on mine separatly. I hope he is right. I don't plan on boosting more than 35 - 40 psi. He said the Hx40 compressor inducer side is 58mm and I just mesuered the Hx35 and it is about 54 = 55mm. 3 - 4 mm isn't much bigger. Well I guess it must flow alot better. It should be a really easy intall I hope.

The number of compressor wheel blades as well as their angle (pitch) can also affect flow characteristics... . not just the inducer/exducer dimensions.

Jayson,

Instalation was easy except for getting that big snap ring back on. I haven't driven the truck yet. Might be ready tomorrow. Problem is I never drove it with the stock tubo because I am just finishing my engine conversion. So I won't be able to compare it for you. It sure sounds good though.

Keep those toes over,

Treven.

Any updated info on the compressor housing swap? Anyone else have experience with this upgrade? Thinking of adding 370s, but don't want to drop the $ for an HX-40.
