Bowser switches between regular and small-screen layout

Is something odd happening with the site? Last few days (about a weeks or so), it's become a toss-up whether I'l see the TDR site with the usual desktop layout or the more compact phone/table layout. I know *I* haven't changed anything deliberately. I logged out and back in. I cleared the entire bowser cache.

It happens in Firefox 52.4.0 (64-bit, Debian). But other bowsers (Chrome, Konqueror, and Epiphany) all show the correct desktop layout.

I tried taking a look with Firefox, but I'm running 56 and can't reproduce it. What is your screen resolution? I'm going to take a look at some of the CSS media tags to see when they are supposed to collapse or not.

Screen: 1920x1280.

Anything I can look at here? (Like the squid cache on the firewall, now that I think of it; but that shoudn't be the trouble since it doesn't decrypt TLS conns. Unless not *everything* goes through TLS.)

Can't be the resolution, that's nowhere near any of the boundaries where it switches anything. If you can run your browser debugger (Menu -> Developer -> Network then refresh the page) let me know if any of the Javascript or CSS files are returning any status code other than 200 or 304. Some of them are served from a content delivery network and there's always a chance one of the nodes isn't sending something.

Many of those errors are expected, the CSS has declarations in there for older browsers, IE, etc.

Try as I might, I am unable to determine the cause at this time, short of setting up another Linux box and running FF 54. (Every system I have right now is a non-GUI server setup). There is an update to the theme provided by the vendor, this might resolve it. We've been discussing here a major upgrade to the software, I'm going to consult to see if we're in a position to do an update to the theme in the interrum, but honestly I'll tell you up front it's going to be very hard to justify as Firefox 54 makes up less than 0.3% of the user base.

This time I *know* its not the web proxy or URL Filter, because they have been disabled on my firewall for some time. And it just switched again today, back to the mobile layout.

But I'm not really surprised. For a long time, I uesd Chromium because Firefox would pull in nonsense icons. At the top of this forum, the icons with profile, settings and logout were meaningless carp; icons of other sites were similarly affected. At some point,they changed back. Recently, I've seen a few icons on a few sites that are wrong.

Thanks for verifying that it's something between me and the TDR site.

I made a small change yesterday to see if it would resolve it. It was a long shot, I added some of the javascripts to the rewrite list which pushes them out to the CDN rather than being served from TDR's server. It shouldn't make a difference, but it might have. If it returns let me know. I plan to talk to Robin about pushing up our schedule to migrate the site over Xenforo forum software, it's far more modern and browser issues are very rare.

I think I just found it. The bowser had been just find for a week. Then suddenly it went back to small-screen. And the dawn broke over ol' marblehead. The window was a little narrower than it had been. Widened it a hundred pixels or so and it switched right back to normal display (after a reload, of course).

So this may be a feature rather than a bug.

Is there no reliable way to detect a small-screen device?
