I was doing a short sprint last week at 90MPH i begain to apply the brakes to make the turn in to my work and the brakes were stiff and didnt do a very good job slowing me down ,,, I ended up about 100 yards past the plant !! I just let it go ... well today approching a stop sign at about 35 MPH I applied the brakes and they were stoping me fine then all of a sudden the pedel went down about 2 inches... ... it contiuned to stop me But freaked me out !!!

later today I was in stop and go traffic ,,, all of a sudden my brakes started squeaking real bad ..... but they stoped me ,,,,,, I coasted for a bit then slowing applied the brakes and they were still squeaking this went on a few rounds ,,, sounded like my screachers were eating up the rotars or something ??? ,,, then As I was coasting again I applied the brakes easy and they were squealing ,,,,then the pedal went almost to the floor ,,, it was still stoping me ... ... when the pedal RESET or what ever it did they quit squeaking ,,,and havent squeaked since ,,,, however ,,,, just now I was going in reverse and applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor and was spongy ,,,, What the heck is the deal ???

I have fluid in my resivor , and NO ABS light or anything ,,

What should I do ?

They dont do it everytime just when you least exspect it ?

Update

I resorted to my normal Last ditch effort ... . Severances and brian took my truck for a spin on the scanner and all seemed well . .

then as he was trying to repet the issue IT DID IT !!!! LOL he said Hummm... and we got out and he said well theres your problem ... . I looked and the pass side rear brake pad gernaded and was hanging out the bottom of the caliper ... the pads had next to Zero wear it just seperated from the backing ... I limped it to NAPA and home and just changed them out ,,,,upon removal of the drivers side it fell off in my hand .

The pads were not worn they just were floating on there backing and throwing the ABS out of wack as is was flopping around in there ect...

the rotora survived but all 4 of mine will be changed in about 15,000 along with all 4 brakes again... .

its been pointed out to me that the 2nd gens eat brakes bad so even if you guys dont have any squeaking ect crawl under there and give them all a good look over

Thanks for the help guys

do you adjust the rears? mine need to be adjusted all the time

Just a reminder... Hes got the 01. 5 to 02 brakes (no rear drums).

I thought the 01. 5 and 02 trucks, had much improved pad service life??

My front finally went bad at 53k, and I drive like a total nut case(similar to Curtis ;) )!

My rear pads still have plenty of life left at 57k.

My truck only has 52,000 on it and ive HAD TO replace all the brakes as now my rotors are ate up and it looks like a 25,000 mile service on the entire brake system

:(

The fronts on the 01. 5 and up are much better. I used to get 10K miles on my '95. Now I get about 25K on my 01. 5 (before the e-brake anyway, hope to see the time between pads go up).

The biggest difference is that the 01. 5s don't have the brake pull that was common in prior models.

There was another post on the 2nd gen forum this week about rear pads separating from the backing. For the last 2 years mine squeek with no brakes under 20mph. Light pedal force and the squeek goes away. Time to change the rear pads this weekend. Can't wait to see what is in there. They have 45K miles, but after all the reports of separation I'm not taking any chances.

No But Ill look into this thanks Bob

The pads seperating from the backing ,,, sounds common place and hard to determine if your a victim untill you drop the caliper out ..... or try to wedge a screw driver and compress the pistons in then you should be able to try to seperate the pads from the backing and see if its connected ...

My Pads were still in great shape and all seemed visually well , and it took what felt to me to be Master Clyinder / Brake Booster / ABS issues before futher investigation

OK I got a quick question..... Is it possible to convert my 95 4X4 to the newer front axle style where the rotors will just slide off and had better breaks with no brake pull??? I am really sick and tired of dealing with this front end!!!!
