2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Brake caliper repair kit

guys both my rams need brake jobs now and i have learned that its pointless to squeeze back the pistons in the caliper and put new shoes on cause you`ll get brake drag and heat up the rotors. it used to be that a guy could buy a caliper repair kit with pistons and rubber seals and slider bolts but i can`t find any at least where i live. any info to pass along on this issue? thanks

Rock Auto has them.

Just curious about your statement "its pointless to squeeze back the pistons in the caliper and put new shoes on cause you`ll get brake drag and heat up the rotors" ? Sounds like a generalized statement that I find to be usually not the case in my repair experiences.

thanks, here in atlantic canada our roads are salted for 6 months of the year and i couldn`t begin to tell you all the problems that causes with our vechicles. the last time i did breaks was 6 years ago and the piston in the caliper have been stuck out almost as far as they can because the pads were worn,the rubber seal break down with the salt and salt and dirt get inside and wear out the pistons and the slider bolts get rusty.

here in Newfoundland most off us live within 100ft of the atlantic ocean and even the air has salt in it ha ha ha ha I have 2 off these trucks to rebuild a 2500 &3500 so if i could find a caliper repair kit it would be great!!!! thanks

You talk about the brake caliper and than speak about shoes (pads), the mix of terms usually identify someone who might not fully understand the function of the parts of the braking system... . you might consider professional help. .



If the boot has kept the dirt out of between the piston and caliper than there is no reason why you can't open the bleeder and compress the pistion... . pushing the dirty fluid out of the system... . Install new pads and bleed the system...



We are in Spokane and we use a lot of chemicals on the road in the winter..... we have no problem...



If we have bad boots than a rebuild is necessary and for us that usually means new pistons. . the material that the piston is made from won't stand dirt... and it will scratch and later cause problems... we always put a kit and new metal pistons...

yea, my rubber seals are torn and let the rust and dirt in ,the price of a complete caliper here is apx $130. 00 can so i was hoping to find a source of rebuilt kits but can find any in canada, i have 2 of these trucks so i could save a lot. where do you get your metal pistons?
