I have 96' 2500 4x4 I am in need of trailer brake controller for my truck. I recently acquired a 14K gooseneck flatbed, Want to know the most recommened, Thank you, Marc

Try a search in the towing and hauling forum. There have been a ton of posts on the units. I just purchased a drawtite unit, digital, for about a 'C' note and it works great. It has the ability to adjust the brake level and the timing that the trailer brakes come on. It was an easy install too.

I would guess that you will see 2 different brake controllers

recommended more than any other. The Jordan and the

Tekonsha Prodigy, both appear to be liked by those who

own them. I have a Prodigy and am quite happy with it.

I also have been using a Prodigy and highly recommend it.

A bit more money than most but well worth it

Prodigy, don't leave home without it. I paid, probably to much, $135 and other than my CIPA mirrors, probably my wife's favorite upgrade to my truck.

I vote for Tekonsha Prodigy too. I tow a 14K 5er and I love the Prodigy. It has this neat boost function that allows you to fine tune the balance of braking power between truck and trailer. I had a couple of cheaper units before the Prodigy and they stunk. The Prodigy uses an accelerometer to measure deceleration rate instead of a simple pendulum like the other units. That makes it much more sensitive to your braking. Try it out. You'll like it.

I bought the Jordan. The install is a little more involved, but I have no complaints overall. The first time I towed with it I knew I hadn't made a mistake. I'd buy another one, no question.

WOW 14K 5er with a 2500 not overloaded too much huh. I hope we don't meet on the road. I'm sure the truck can handle it but pushing the envelope aren't we?

I've used time-based (Reese Brakeman I), inertial (Tekonsha Sentinel) and proportional (Jordan Ultima 2020) brake controllers. After using the Jordan, I'd never go back to the others. Yes, it costs a little more and takes a little more installation time, but in this case you get what you pay for. We tow a 13,500 lb 5th wheel and are running at a GCW of 21,180 lbs (21,500 lb GCWR).

Nope, well, maybe a little. 99 2500 has tow rating of 14K and GCVW of 20K. Both are drive train limits. My last weigh-in was 13. 7K and 21K (Ooops, 5% over). Both axles were within limits. I'm anal about maintenance and safety items (tire pressure, brake inspection, etc. ), and I take it easy in the right lane. If you see me on the interstate don't laugh too hard.

I just ordered a Prodigy from CW. They have a $30 off special right now. I paid $95. I've never seen them that cheap. I jumped on it!!

I took the advice of this crowd and bought a Jordan and am very happy with it. Had a Teknoska Mark 24 or something that was a piece of junk.



Only gripe with the Jordan is they don't provide a few 5-cent wire connectors and offer the option to send the required 20 amp breaker. Had to drive 20 miles hunting down parts in the middle of the last-minute installation.
