I put a Tekonsha Envoy brake controller in a guys '05 pickup. When he plugs the trailer into the truck, the trailer brakes automatically lock up. I'm sure I just switched a couple wires around. Anybody know what the wiring should be? I know it has to be with the controller, as I did not mess with the trailer plug.

I know on my truck i had the same problem but it ended up being the 7-6 pin adapter that i was using. i had to take apart and change the constant hot and the brake wires around and then all was well. This might not apply to your case but its an idea.

If you wired the controler blue to blue etc that is more than likely the problem. These things are not colour matched to the controlers.

I'm planning on wiring up my BrakeSmart but haven't been able to find the factory brake controller wiring under the dash. I just had a gauge install done last weekend and for the life of me I didn't see a wired up loom or wiring anywhere. What color is the factory brake wiring and where should I look... more towards the center of the dash or directly under the steering wheel. Is it a loop of wire or what does it look like.

If you could send me a PM that would help as I'm totally in the weeds at work right now but any advice would help.

Thanks,

Randy

It could very well be the trailer though! I ran into this on a brand new trailer and no plug adapter.

If the brake controller has some kind of indicator that tells you when the controller is applying voltage (digital readout on the prodigy, light goes from green to red on the voaygers) that could be useful. If as soon as the trailer is plugged into the truck the brakes engage, and the brake controller is either not putting out voltage, or to be sure you can unplug it (if you used the factory plug) I would guess the trailer plug on the trailer or truck has the brake and battery wires switched (like someone stated above), this would send a full 12volt charge to the brakes, causing them to be locked the whole time it is plugged in.

On finding the factory wiring for the controller, I think they come standard, so it should be there, would have four wires going to it, on the previous gen. trucks it was over near the ebrake or above the clutch, big gray plug, has four wires going to it; a smaller red one (maybe 16gauge) a smaller black one (16 gauge) a big blue one (10-12 gauge) and an equally sized power wire, seems like it was red and yellow maybe?

On an 03 the brake wire connector is located above the large white connector just above the ebrake against the firewall. The connector is blue and is a bit of a pain to plug the connector in. Easier if you just take out the one bolt holding the white connector in to loosen it up a bit. The 05 (at least on mine) it was located way behind the white connector against the firewall which was real hard to see and even more of a pain to connect. The main white connector was easy to remove which made it easier to get to that wire. There are no 4 wires just hanging around in there to hook up the controller, it should have been in the glovebox and needs to be hooked up to the controller first then plugged in.

Hope that helps a bit.

I'm talking about the wiring harness that comes in the glovebox that you plug in over by the parking brake pedal. The controller has Red, white, blue, and black wires. Don't remember the colors on the harness supplied with the truck. Just trying to figure out which wires go together, so I can figure out where I screwed up. Like I said, it has to be in the wiring, because the trailer works fine on another truck. Thanks

From the controller the colors are: Red, stop light switch, off side. White, ground. Blue, trailer brakes. Black, 12v+. If you hooked the red wire to the wrong (hot) side of the stop light switch, the brakes will be applied at hook up. Try this site, might be of help. bg http://www.tekonsha.com/files/BC Wiring Harness 7854 Rev. A.pdf

They cahnged the wire colors on the 05 trucks. If someone still has the piece of paper that came in the bag with the plug, it would be extremely helpful. If you could list the colors and fuction of each, I'd sure appreciate it.
