Brake controller adjusting

stupid tire question

I tow very infrequently and was given a kelsey brake controller. It is the Micro Control HD Plus with a remote button. I was hoping to use it for the few times that I tow. My question is What wire do I hook to what on my Dodge wiring harness. The controller has a White, Black, Dark Blue and Red wire. My Dodge wiring harness has a Light Blue, a Green and black, a White and red, and a Blue and white. If you could help me that would be great. Other wise I will just put spade connectors on each wire and play with them until I get it to work right. Thanks. Joe

Joe,

I think this is the color code on your brake controller from memory:

black wire: 12 volt dc

white wire: chassis ground

red wire: 12 volt dc "start" voltage from brake light switch

blue wire: output to trailer brakes

I would not recommend touching wires to identify. Touching the wrong wires will frequently damage the brake controller.

I installed it and after looking closer the wires had writing on them as to were they go. I hooked it all up and the brakes work if I manually activate them but not when I hit my brakes. I am going to do some more investigating tomorrow. If anyone has any ideas they would be appreciated. I am going to check all of my connections. Thanks Joe

Joe,

If the brake controller doesn't activate from the brake pedal it is missing the brake light "on" signal. That signal comes from the brake light switch when the brake pedal is pressed and enters the brake controller via the red wire. If your truck has the factory towing package the Dodge end of the wire and the signal is available in the wiring harness. If not, tap into the wire from the brake light switch.

Yes I have the towing package and I did use Electrical connectors and hooked the wires from the controller to the plug that came with my truck. I am going outside in just a little while to see if I can figure it out. Hopefully just a bad connection. Thanks

I got the controller working great. It was just that it was not adjusted properly. It needed to be set for the angle at which it was mounted then it worked like it should. I didn't have instructions for it so it just took a little playing around with. Thanks for your help. Joe
