2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Brake Controller Wiring

When I bought my truck, the previous owner gave me a plug with some short wires, supposed to be the factory brake controller plug. I never had such a truck wiring before, where do the wires go and what kind of controller must I use? Any help would be appreciated.

By the way, I was very disappointed with the fancy factory 2 inch thick service manual. First of all, it covers so many different trucks and jeeps, it is very hard to use. The entire book is nothing but fixing trouble codes, finding anything about my diesel is something it don't do.

Has anybody found something better, like something that deals with reality, like a wiring diagram that tells me where the brake receptacle wires go?!

You should have the mating plug tucked up under your dash. This is just to be able to hook up any brake controller to your wiring without purchasing any additional adaptors. However when I purchased my brake controller I went ahead and got the adaptor for the dodge, this way it was simple plug and play.

when i wired up my jordan to replace the prehistoric tenkosha that was there when i bought the truck the wires were butchered pretty good, i used the power that's fused just for a brake controller from the fusebox and ran my own blue brake wire from the controller to the back of the truck to avoid potential crap, it's not a complicated circuit

I was not completely clear. I have a Kelsey brake controller, with no plug, just four wires with blunt ends. I know where those four wires go.

I also have the plug with four wires sticking out of it, nothing else except of course the receptacle under the dash that it plugs into. What I am missing is just where those four wires go to. I might get someone to watch, since there are a limited number of choices, run down the brake wire to the trailer plug, put juice on the wires and see what lights up the brake lights, and of the course the wire with juice is the hot wire. which then leaves the remaining wire has to be the ground (I am guessing based on prior trailer brake systems I have had. ).

I of course can also just hard wire my controller into the system, no big deal, but I far prefer to plug my controller into the factory receptacle since I have the plug.

I am from the old school, just thought the factory service manual would have a wiring schematic. Nope, just get codes and run down the problem. Problem is, there IS no code for the trailer brake system.

My Factory Service Manual covers ONLY 99 Dodge Ram pickups. Yes, it does cover 1500 through 3500, auto, stick, and gas and diesel. Way more data than I'll ever hope to need, including complete wiring diagrams.



Sounds to me like you've got something else.

If you look under the dash,on the firewall,right side of the steering column,you should find a female plug. This plug is attached to the firewall. Plug your harness in. This will leave the four wires to connect your controller. Hope this helps.

Service Manual

Nope, I am sure I have the same one Geno's sells, by Chrysler Corp. Look on page 919, it got the codes for what it covers, for Eagle Talon, Jeeps, Chrysler minivans, Dakotas, Concordes etc. Far too much stuff to sort thru in my estimation. Mine is for 1996 trucks on top of that, I got screwed by an EBayer.

Hey, I finally got to reading more, I REALLY got screwed. This is a 2 inch thick manual, entirely about PCM's! I stupidly took the ebay title and description at face value. Anybody need a 1996 PCM service manual (comes with a 1996-1997 Driver Airbag System diagnostic Procedures manual as well). I can't believe that it takes 2 inches of manual to react to PCM troublt codes, but it does!

Don I think this will help, I have a tekonsha prodagy & its wired like this red on controler to white on truck harness, white on controler to black on harness, black on controler to red on harness, & blue to blue. (Hey atleast they got one rite!!!!!)

Thanks, I figured it out. Put a voltmeter on, the one with 12 volts is the power. Touched the hot one to one wire - big sparks!, found the ground. Touched the 12 to the other two, one did nothing, gotta be the trailer brake wire, the other one lights the stop lights. .

I bought a controller off EBay with a Dodge plug on it, so will save my old controller for a spare, and use the one I just bought.
