Rear brake froze up and took the drum with it. Problen is that I have two listings for drums I want to go to the three inch brakes and the parts house list says 3" is for dually and 2 1/2 for a 9 1/4 heavy axle. I not sure which is correct. I thought the dually drums were the same as the W250 drums.

You don't want the ones for the small axle. I'm not certain if there are any differences but you could check to see if they are the same drums as a 1990. In that year they differences between 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks were the 3" brakes. The drums are the same and both trucks had single rear wheels in the 4x4's. If it is the same part number as the 93 dually then those are the ones you want.

John, my younger brother put the 1 ton brakes on his '92'.

He has never regretted that choice. Basically as I understand it there is just an upgrade to 3" shoes. (I have not checked Jeremy's info) The uprate was done on a '92' 5spd and he says that now it stops great even with camper fully loaded, trailer fully loaded.

Let us know how you make out, speaking for myself, I sometimes forget that stopping is just as important and going! ;)

I got it all strait now I put 1 1/8 cylinders on and 3 inch shoes. Still can't get the brakes to bleed complete. I had same problem with front calipers a while back but I got that licked finally. My main thing was that I did a search and got the part # for the drum and it was not the right one. I finally got the right one from NAPA $101. 00 not as bad as I thought. So watch your emergency cables mine seems to have come off in the drum. It took no time to grind the shoe in to the drum.

Would you by chance have the part number for the rear drum. I assume the drums are the same for both sides. Your truck is a 250? I have very little left on my rear shoes 1/8" maybe and my right rear drum has some serious grooves in it so I think it is shot. Any brake advice would help.

Thanks

Well I went all the way,new springs@adjusters(not cheap) one new drum(NAPA #4401417) 3"shoes,1 1/8 wheel cylinders, and drum oil seals. I think it's worth it. Total cost around $270. 00. I think I might replace my brake lines!mine were froze on. Took me about eight hours including picking up parts and other drum from the machine shop and filling rear with new oil.

rear wheels

Hey John, If your wanting to chuck the Selflocking nut and lock pin and go to the old two nuts and lock tab washer here are the Spicer numbers. Nuts 35270 Washer 35269 Axle wrench 2 1\2 OTC 7158 Just set the preload on the timkens at zero and bend the tabs over nuts and you know the preload, no guesssing! It works great. If you haven't installed the Speedie Sleeves on the axles, I would highly recommend them,as there good assurence you won't end up with a groove on your axle tube. CR # 99287 the measurement will be 2. 873-2. 879. If you need any numbers feel to e-mail. ;) :p TIM

I'm confused here. I replaced the rear brakes about a year ago and went to the local NAPA store. I knew the guy behind the counter and told him I needed to replace the brakes and wanted to step up to 3" shoes and 1 1/8" cylinder. He looked up the truck and said" that is the size the book shows for your truck". (It also was the size that I took out)

Did they change something during the 93 year model? Did some 3/4 tons have the 3" brakes? I bought the truck used so they could have been changed to 3" but the book said 3"?????

paccool if you have a dually then yes,it came with 3" brakes and 1 1/8 cylinders. Some 250's were upgraded by the dealer or original owners. I heard there was a TSB on this but haven't verified it yet. :p
