Brake Dust

I recently bought a set of the Dodge factory alloy wheels (satin finish) for my 03 and noticed I see the brake dust build up a little more. I did notice it slightly on the chrome clad wheels I had, but maybe it's just the alloy wheels are new to me and I'm more aware of it. Any way can I get some suggestions on what susposely is a easy to use (spray on hose off) product to help rid this brake dust. I read about the product Kleen Wheels that Geno's sells and by the way do they look and work well for this dust. Any pics showing the wheels with the Kleen Wheels installed.

Tony, I have the kleen wheels on my 2000 and the work great, 0 break dust, you will like them and the are directional (sp?) to help cool break pads Don

Thanks Don I knew someone had to have them on here. I'm glad they do work out because I'm thinking seriously about ordering some. That brake dust can build up and really make the wheels look bad, on top of that it is very corrosive to the wheel from what I understand.

Bump! Sure thought there would be more people here usings the Kleen Wheels brake dust covers. I would like to see some pics of some installed if possible, I'm trying to decide which, if the black or light gray color dust covers would look the best. That dust really sticks out like a sore thumb on the factory alloy wheels (satin finish) more than the chrome clads.

I tried to get the kleen wheels for my 05 and had no luck. Went through 3 or 4 different pairs and could not get a one to fit. When you would put the kleen wheel in the rim like they tell you to there would be an inch to inch and a half space from the rim to the wheel cover.

I would love to get them for mine but I dont know if they fixed the problem yet.

I have the factory alloys on my '03 and they appear to have a clear coating on them. I just use soap and water and a wheel brush and they look brand new. I don't put much effort into scrubbing them either. Just a quick brush down and they're clean.

Tony, I had tried the black ones. I don't think they had the gray ones last year. But I could be wrong though.

If you have any luck in getting these to work pleas let me know as I am still interested in getting these for my truck also.

Dave I do the same with the soap,water, and brush deal also, and the next day I start seeing the dust forming again, at the time of my first post I guess I was thinking about some wheels I've seen on other vehicles having the hardcore dusting on the front wheels (really let go) like real dark gray nearly black looking at times while rears are still looking good. I want the wheels to look good of course, but don't always have the time to wash my truck, sometimes I may go three or four weeks before it does get washed so the looks is not the number #1 priority at times , my main concern is this brake dust is very corrosive and if let go will destroy the clear coating on the wheel. Buddy on mine let his alloys go to long and the wheels look pretty crappy now. I just figured Kleen Wheels would be the way to go if we could find the one's to fit right.



Truckie if I find out anything has changed I'll let you know.

I sometimes go too long between washes too. It usually takes a couple of weeks before I start seeing brake dust on my front wheels. Have you changed your brake pads from stock?



I wasn't aware the dust could harm the clear coating. I'll have to keep up with it more.

No brake pads have been changed out, I still have the factory pads with little over 36K on the truck. I'm very light on brakes anyway, I do alot of coasting to my stops looking ahead for the stop coming up. My wife though can go through three sets of brake pads to my one set. :-laf I am according to her always trying to tell her how to drive if I'm riding in the passenger seat. Just a couple Saturdays ago I churched up the truck at the local car wash, did the whole nine yards of cleaning and the next day Sunday we were out and about all day for a Sunday drive to a lake we frequent, when we got home I noticed a light coating of dust on the front wheels so I ran my finger across the wheel and it came back black from the dust.



My mechanic friend said that dust was more attracted to the alloys more so than the chrome clads, plus very corrosive to the alloys more so than then the chrome clads. Some of the newer cars I've heard, come factory equipped with Kleen Wheels Dust Covers just to help protect those expensive alloy wheels from the brake dust. I wished DC would of included our alloy wheels as a canidate for the Kleen Wheels since there $389. 00 a wheel if you buy them from the dealership.

The wife placed the order for them this morning from Geno's, should be here in a few day's, I hope they fit ok and don't have any problems like Truckie did.

mine fit tight, you had to push them into the wheel,I went with black I think it was the only color choice we had then, Don

I received the Kleen Wheels Dust Shields Thursday from Geno's, that was fast. I installed them this morning (Saturday), took all of 15 to 20 minutes for the install with floor jack and impact wrench. They fit perfectly in the wheel, but you do need to follow the instructions as where the placement of each shield is to be installed, they have cooling fins (directional) for cooling the brakes, I believe Don mentioned that on a previous post. The wife ordered them and she forgot to ask if they offer any other colors besides black, so black is what I received. They look good to me and I believe black would have been my best choice anyhow, although I would like to see what light gray or dark gray would have looked like,those colors might clash with the wheels though I don't know, but I'm happy with the results on mine.



Truckie I ordered part #2289 dust shields, this is for the 17" five spoke factory alloy 03-06 year model. Mine are the satin finish wheel not the polished version. I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but you might ask if your going to try them out again. Good luck this time on them fitting if you do order again.

I've been looking at these. Tell me how they work after a couple months. Right now I'm running my "winter" tires and I cleaned and waxed them prior to tire mounting. Very little problem keeping them clean.
