Hello Folks,

Need some help from the brake gurus. I had a brake leak at both ends of the truck. The front came from a missing caliper support key(who knows where it came off) causing the caliper to tilt forward on the steering knuckle and knocking the banjo bolt loose. No brakes at 45 mph what a ride! Had to step on the brakes even harder causing a steel line in back to burst. I put new calipers on front today and bled them. Peddle is still going to the floor, this is without the motor running. Its been raining all day so I said the heck with it for today. I going to take it to the shop so I can stay warm and dry while I replace the steel line on back and put new drums, cylinders and shoes on also. Will the peddle firm up with the motor running? The shop is about 6 miles from my house, country roads, slow speeds and not much traffic. I should still have front brakes even though the back brakes are not working. I know they a seperate circuits. What your thoughts? Should I make the trek? I hate to dolly it. Thanks in advance

John

You won't get as pedal out of it if the back is still split open, need to get it all buttoned up and then bleed the entire system. 6 miles with no brakes, either you have some really huge cajones or little gray matter up stairs... . which one is it? :D

Maybe a little of both :) Just thinking maybe I can splice in a sort piece of line with a compression fitting to get it to the shop. Are the brake lines 3/16"?

yes most lines I have run across are 3/16 good luck n just go slow if nothing else as for Grey Matter don't we all have alittle of that somewhere on us LOL

Does your parking brake work? If so, I'd say go for it. If not, I'd pay $40 for a tow, vs hitting ____ (use your imagination and fill in the blank), or dolly it. 6mi slow wont hurt your Getrag, esp if it is overfilled. You DO have it overfilled, right?

I'm not saying it is right, but i have driven a truck with no brakes to the shop. It was a '85 W250, I just put the tcase in low range and used the motor to slow me down. This would work even better in a ctd and especially with the low 1st gear or the getrag. As long as you don't need to travel through a high traffic area or go very fast, I say go for it.
