brake issue

Hello all,I have a question for you all about brakes. Today while using my new to me 92 D250(i bought it a little over a month ago)the brake pedal seemed to be traveling a bit father and father than i was used to it going. The truck was still slowing but not like it used to. I just got home from playing hockey and figured i would check the brake fluid level. Well the front res was really low. I don't know what the level should be because it is really dark and cold outside but it was a lot lower than the rear. Could this be just the brakes wearing down and the fluid level dropping?Or is the culprit more than likely a leak?There are no warning lights on the dash lit. Should i just try refilling and run it?Thanks in advance.

Refill it and keep and eye on it. If is starts droping to much you might have a leak somewhere.



Do you see in new spots in the drive way?

I don't really have a driveway per say. It's all gravel and covered in snow right now. i will put a piece of plywood underneath it to see if any thing is dripping.

Other things to look for....

Check around the back of the master cylinder for leaking



If you pump the pedal does it come back up? Sign of lining/surface wear or internal leak in the master cylinder.



One way to test for leaks is with the engine running stand on the pedal hard. If it falls away you most likely have a leak.

I had the same thing happen to me. Only thing is I hadn't checked the fluid for a while and the front sucked air and I lost the front brakes Turns out that the master cylinder was toast. Well an update of my brake issue. This morning on my way to doing a side job i stepped on the brakes and the pedal traveled very far very easy but the truck did slow a bit. The anti-lock light came on as well as the brake warning light. after another quick pump of the pedal the lights went out and the pedal felt better. I checked the res and found the levels to be fine. I then drove to my father in laws house and we proceded to remove the front wheels and check the calipers and brake linings for leaks and wear. Nothing out of the ordinary there. We the bled the front brakes and found no air. We then went to the rear and saw no obvious leaks. We bled the rears and found alot of air. After that the pedal has felt fine and no more warning lights since. Here is a question. Is the front portion of the res for the rear brakes?I ask only because when we were bleeding the rear the front res. level was dropping. How could I have gotten air in the rear system?Where is the anti-lock valve?How do I bleed it?Could I have a slow leak in the rear system?

The front res. of the master cylinder is for the rear brakes. You might have gotten some air in the rears from the low fluid levels in the MC. As for the anti-lock valve, it's above the rearend in the driver side frame rail and it has a bleeder screw for bleeding. Hope this helps.
