This is a question for all of you out there concerning brake life. I've spoken to quite a few Dodge owners that have gotten as low as 9000 miles :--) on a set of pads. I'll quantify that they own pre 2001. 5 units. I just changed my front pads out at 58,000. Most of my mileage is around the bay area so I'm in traffic a lot and do use my auto as a slow-down tool.

I'm curious as to the actual relationship between poor design and driving habits. Mike

PS: The pads I took off did not have the wear sounders.

I got over a 160,000 miles out of the original front pads and still have the original rear pads. My Mom got about 140,000 out of her fronts and still has the original rear pads at over 160,000.

BTW mines a 97 and hers is a 99.

brakes

I only have 25,000 on my truck so you can take this with a grain of salt. My brake pads show no sign of wear. I do use my e-brake alot.

I replaced my front pads at about 28,000 miles due to uneven wear. I live in the hills and my drive into work is mostly downhill so I use my brakes a lot. I drive it pretty hard sometimes too so I'm sure my driving habits had something to do with it. I got my replacement pads from Sam.

I run pretty hard and run in traffic a lot. I got 40K out of the stock pads, and 40K out of the last 2 sets of Performance Friction Carbon Metallics. I did not wear out the stock rear shoes, but replaced them at about 60K miles due to oil soak from leaking axle seals. Since then I have another 70K or so on it with the best Napa had, and they are still well over half.

Demonstration rides are the worst, a couple hot stops (100+ to stopped ASAP) takes a lot of life out of the brakes.

Replaced front pads around 70k. Bought rear shoes at the same time and compared to stock shoes on truck which still looked almost new. Left stock shoes on the rear. At 95k now and need to check components. Mostly highway miles with a conservative operator.

WOW I thought my useage was normal I guess not. Front brakes at 25,000 then I had Midas put their lifetime pads on and I get about 30-35k out of those. rears well mine have never worked other than under very hard braking when hauling large weight or trailer so they are still like new. I do pull a nonbrake equipped boat and a 33' enclosed trailer that has brakes but never thought I was that far out of wack with other 2nd gen truck. my first gen brakes lasted until about 80 then replaced front and rear (have 130k on it now).

can't comment on 03 as it only has 3k on it.

I still have original pads on all 4 wheels (4 wheel disc brakes for me :) ) and truck has 67K miles to date. Almost all highway miles, almost no towing or hauling. I don't have an exhaust brake, but would like one someday :D I rotate my tires at every oil change and inspect the pads at that time. All the pads have at least 1/2" thickness left. However, I baby my truck a lot. I always slow down gradually when coming up to a stop light or sign, and touch the brake pedal as lightly as it just barely needs to stop. I have been lucky in not having to panic stop yet, but have come close a few times in Sacramento traffic...

I've got original pads on all four corners at 49,000 miles. Front pads show very little wear. Rears show almost none. I drive mostly highway.

Thanks for the input everyone. Now I know the limiting factor is driver output:eek: on the slow me down.

Question I have is how do I give the news?

1 Stop smart?

2 Plan ahead?

3 The truck weights a lot?

4 You have to take a CTD driving course?

5 Don't stop you're bigger than they are?

6 Lessons learned are forgotten until you get the bill?

Again thanks, Mike
