I was planning on changing my front brake pads today because they have 20K miles on them. I measured, 50% worn compared to new ones. The set on the truck are NAPA semi-metallic the $60. 00 grade (second to the most expensive). I figured I have at least 10K miles left on these  . Give me a piece of your mind folks :-laf

Happy Father's Day week to all the Dads :D

If you are planning on an extended trip I would think about it. Otherwise, just keep the new pads on hand and change them later down the road.

If I had to take a random guess, I would say you have right around 20K miles left on them. ;)

Seriously though, you should get at least another 10K out of them before you need to change them.

The amount of time you have left on the pads depends entirely on how you use your truck and whether the rear brakes are doing their share. (See the coments on ABS and eliminating the ABS).

Some caution I would add. The pads I have used have all been rivited on and they will still have (what appears to be plenty) material left when they shuck off the lining and ruin the rotor. They usually will be different from one side to the other (more wear). I have found the passenger side to wear the most (which I think is caused from more splash and crud on the edge of the road). But also the caliper piston can be slightly tight (see comments on phenolic as opposed to metalic pistons) and cause accelerated wear.

Bottom line, look at the thinest pad and replace both by that. If you wind up with a good pad, save it and use it to extend the life of the new set if there is still unbalanced wear. I have also seen irregular wear comparing the inside to the outside pad. The slide area can be binding. Be sure you check all four pads.

Last summer I heard the dreaded sound of rivets on the rotors.

With the engine noise etc. , I didn't hear anything unusual until they were actually both making noise. (they had about 60 Kmiles on them)

Obviously it toasted the rotors. That didn't bother me so much but the new ones are JUNK. After about 6 months they started to warp now they need turning bad.

Bottom line... protect the OEM rotors if you can.

Great pad info!

Thanks for the post 1st G-men, I knew I could count on this forum :D

I'll keep an eye, and ear on the pads, (10k maximum... ) Patrick.

I checked mine @ 75K miles and they had 40% left.

I just did them last week @ 113K miles with about 5-10% left.

That's cutting it a little close.

Run em!
