Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Brake Problem

Friend of mine has an early 98 12 valve with an electric over hydraulic hay spear on back. Occasionally when he activates the hydraulic system, the brakes fail. Pedal goes all the way to the floor! Have not been able to find the problem, usually wait ten minutes or so and brakes will start working again. Any ideas?

Is the hay spear hydraulics self contained? no attachment to the brakes in any way? There are no connections I can think of that would be common between the 2 unless the electrical take off for the hay unit is crossed some how with the ABS system. Does it happen at any other times?

Only connection to the electrical system by the hay spear is a hot lead that runs directly to the battery and of course a ground to the frame. Only time it happens is when the hay spear is activated.

Sounds like it is messing with the ABS.



Where is the ground for the pump connected, to the frame? If it is, maybe the where it is connected, needs to be cleaned and put some anti-seize on the frame at the connection. It works better than die-electric grease and lasts longer. May need to do the same on all the battery connections. If that doesn't work, try running the ground cable back to the battery. May to find a surge suppresser of some sort.
