I own several 3rd gen trucks... but my BIL has a 98 3500 dually, auto 4x4 that goes through brake pads in about 20K miles... . the truck now has 250K and he's done at least 10 brake jobs over the years... . I've tried to sway him away from who's been doing the work... in that I don't think he is using quality pads.....

He is now asking me if there is an upgrade to larger rotors, calipers etc... I've not read anything on this but thought this would be the place to ask.....

He's got a service body on the truck, and tows as well so there is no doubt about how tough he is on it.....

Any thoughts.....

20 K sounds right for a heavy truck.

It's all about the weight of the truck.

Mine weighs about 8,000 lbs.

I get 20 to 30 k out of my brakes.

I have good pads, slotted rotors, and the 1 ton wheel cylinders.

I also have a transmission controller that keeps the transmission converter locked while de-accelerating.

Keep an eye on the caliper bolt lube.

The brakes will wear really fast when the caliper bolts start sticking due to lack of lubrication.

I had to lube mine every 2000 miles.
