Replaced the hydroboost today, it was leaking. Brake lights stay on, pluger on swictch doesn't come out far enough. I understand there is an adjustment procedure, but myplunger won't pull out. Do the '97's have the plungers that threads out?

I did not have this problem in my 97 when I replaced my hydroboost but recently my emergency brake was not working and I removed the emergency brake assembly. I messed with that switch and it was a little tricky. I looked up the procedure in the manual and got the detent to work. If someone does not chime in I'll look it up tonight and post the info.

I got my hydro boost from NAPA, my switch was significantly short after we installed it. I've been all through my 1997 Dodge shop manual and can't find it. Please let me know what page it is. thanks

I'll be home in about an hour and I'll let you know. I thought I got it from the manual but I'll verify. It could of been from a thread. It was a couple weeks ago when I messed with it.

from the 96 manula it says
pull switch plunger all the way out
push it in 4 detent positions
That is the required preset
I guess you can push it in more or less depending where you need to adjust it

Tha manual has you doing this with the switch out
to remove turn it 30* counterclockwise to align tab with notch

"Kenny61" had the procedure correct. The procedure is in the 97 Dodge Service Manual on Page 5-17 thru 5-18 (Brake section). This is word for word out of the manual.

Removal and Installation

Stop Lamp switch.

Removal:

(1. ) Remove knee bolster for access to stop lamp switch and pedal.

(2. ) Disconnect switch harness (fig 19. ).

(3. ) Press and hold brake pedal in applied position.

(4. ) Rotate switch counterclockwise (CCW) about 30 degrees to align switch lock tab with notch in bracket.

(5. ) Pull switch rearward out of mounting bracket and release brake pedal.

Installation:

(1. ) Pull switch plunger all the way out to fully extended position.

(2. ) Push switch plunger inward 4 detent positions (or clicks). This is required preset position for switch installation. Plunger will extend approximately 14 mm (0. 55 inch) out of housing at this setting.

(3. ) Connect harness wires to switch,

(4. ) Press and hold brake pedal down.

(5. ) Install switch. Align tab on switch with notch in switch bracket (Fig. 20). Then insert switch in bracket and turn it clockwise (CW) about 30 degrees to lock it in place.

(6. ) Release brake pedal. Then lightly pull pedal fully rearward (see caution below). Pedal will adjust switch plunger to correct position as pedal is moved to rear.

Caution:do not use excessive force to move the pedal rearward for switch adjustment. Excessive force will damage the switch.

I hope this helps will your problem. Let us know the results.

If the brake pedal has been pulled back hard, it will "adjust" the switch plunger too far into the switch. On mine, I had to remove the switch and take it apart to get the plunger to come back out. Then when I installed it as above, I was able to adjust it correctly.

I guess the original "stuck in" position is what's referred to above as being damaged. Taking it apart and fiddling until the plunger came back out is all that was needed.
