Odometer and Tripometer Cease Functioning

On my 91 there is a diaphram looking device that is mounted at 90 degrees to the steering pump. It has lines going to it.

Exactly what is this piece? What is it's function?

I ask for my son as he is installing a Cummins from a 1989 pickup (D-350 dually) into an S-10.

This part is in the way of the S-10s frame and needs to be either re-located if possible, or removed. It is the last item in the way.

I'll be there tonight to look at it for myself, but anything you guys can advise me of in advance would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jay

Vacuum pump, maybe? On my '92 there is not a diaphragm pump, it's some other kind of vacuum pump, and there is nothing sticking out. Maybe you can swap it out for a different style vacuum pump?

Having had both types on the same engine, I can say for sure without even looking that what you described, is in fact, the vacuum pump for the brakes, and whatever else runs off vacuum. You might try getting a P/S-vacuum pump off a 91. 5-93, or try running it with only one pod.

Guy, thanks for the replies.

I didn't realize there were two pumps in parallel.

We removed the bottom pump to make room for the steering box and will make a plate to seal off the opening. We'll try using one pump and see if that works.

If need be we can add an electric pump.
