2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Brakes upgrade

The brakes on my 98 truck have never been very good . Especially when towing. I have been trying to find some one to up grade them. Saw ad in Tailer life with ERGin Corona Calif Any input would helb Bob Hart

EGR makes some good products. You did not say what model 98 you had. If a 2500 you can install the rear slave cylinders from a 3500 to increase rear braking. EGR makes upgraded hoses for the front disc calipers that don't expand as you brake so the pedal stays firmer also. They also have upgraded pads, shoes, rotors and calipers also.

I did the EGR upgrade and it was the best upgrade I have done to the truck it stops a great deal better and no pulling. Expensive but good safe stopping power is worth it.

I put on new pads from these guys and really appreciate them... they also make a rear disc brake kits to retro-fit our

rigs---seems like guys like them... . might want to check in with the towing crowd... ... ... ..... R, J. B.

I had a 98. 5 2500 with the 8800 lb option.



The parts books told me that in 98 the 3500 and 2500 both with the Dana 80 had the same size wheel cylinders. I know that in 97 the 2500 had smaller wheel cylinders.



If Mr Peterson (the brake guy) is around, he might be able to answer this question.



Not sure how many miles you got, but if your rotors are ok, try replacing the front pads with Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads (autozone), then adjust your rear brakes correct.



On your truck you should be adjusting the rear brakes every oil change! They are self adjusting, but even when the self adjuster works, it does not tighten the rear shoes enough.



Do a search on adjusting rear shoes if you need directions.



Those EGR rotors do look nice if there the ones I was thinking of. I don't work for Autozone, but they sell rotors that are drilled/grooved as well for your truck.



PS: A BD Exhaust brake will make your brakes feel great

if you go to autozone, make sure you get the heavy duty one. done that 4 yrs ago and was sold the LIGHT duty one. just replaced them again and the mistake was discovered. make sure they are in the 3700 series of numbers. 370 or 3705, or something like that the caliper side has the double spring, heavy duty type. just my penny's worth.

Kudos to EGR

I put EGR pads on the front awhile back(10,000 miles).

Yesterday I raised the front wheels off the ground to adjust the steering box.



Something strange happened!

The front tires actually rotated.

There is little to no drag on the rotors!

The tires would just spin like they had no pads at all.



It must be the highly superior caliper lube and the correct pad compounds.



I'll never go back to cheap pads!
