I have a early 98 with an awfull brake shuder,it seems to be rear as it can be felt anywhere on the truck but no worse in the steering wheel. The truck has 66K and about 2K on new shoes and drums turned, this made no difference. Om a normal stop it is barely noticable, but if you stand on them it can get a littie hairy. Has anyone tried disc on the back of one of these?

Jim, Have you done the front brakes? If the rotors have been turned, I'll bet their warped and have run-out from the heat

Hemi Dart (those were the days!) I don't know if the fronts have been replaced as I bought it with 44K on it,but at 66k andtons of pad left they probaly have been. I'll have trouble finding somone in the area that can turn them on the truck but it,s on the to do list. Thanks JCN

I've also had this problem on a 98 and one thing that I did was to center the rear brake drums by removing the rear tires and making sure the drums were free. I then ran three lug nuts against the drum and then had someone hold the brakes while I removed the lug nuts and replaced the tire. Do both sides while someone is holding the brake this centered the drums and worked well for me. Just my . 02.

Contact Sam Peterson he is to brakes what Bill Kondolay is to Auto transmissions. Sam is the Guru for brakes on this website. His e-mail address is Cedarridgeent@mindspring.com He owns a brake shop in Olympia Wash. Tell him Dave Gardner sent you.

Thanks for the compliment Dave. This is a post that I need to ask Jim some questions to see if we can get the problem solved. My correct e-mail add is cedarridgeent@aol.com. I will be glad to help.

Jim sometimes its easier to diagnose on the phone. You can call me at 360/357-4958 during the work week from 8. 30 to 5. 30 also. ---Sam

I also had a 98 before this truck. I had the rear brake Drums go out of round. It seems that they can get warped pretty easily. If you let them get warm and then park with the emergency brake on hard, it sometimes will do it. Not saying that this will happen all the time, but there was a post about it a while back. I had to have mine turned.

Well there is no substitute for expereance, thanks to Sam Peterson for what seems like a painfully obvious idea. I tried setting the e-brake while rolling forward slowly,no doubt it's in the rear. Back home on the jack stands idling forward and set the e-brake one notch at a time it was even more obvious. These drums were just turned so off I go for new ones. I'll update this when it's fixed. Thanks again Sam for going above and beyond.

Had a similar problem on my truck, only on the front rotors. Long story short was that one of the rotors was turned . 009 out. The shop corrected it and no futher problems.

Jim--Sounds like you may be making some progress. I am concerned that you may not have the proper heal & toe clearance on the rear shoes. Posibility that the rear shoes did not have the proper arc to fit the drums. Check your shoes and see if you have full shoe contact or just on the ends. If this may be the case they will shake like crazy. I know you said the drums had just been turned but hopefully they are smooth and don't have a thread pattern in them. This can also make the shake. I would still like to know if you checked the fronts with the wheels running. Let me know---Sam

Sam I checked the shoe contact patch afew miles after instalation(looking for anything that I didn't get on right or had come loose, broke ect. ) the shoes were wearing on the middle two thirds and not on the ends at all at least not yet. the drums were smooth when I put them on. I haven't tried the fronts yet as my jackstand situation isn't what it should be and I chickend out. no sense of adventure I guess, hearing my own address on the fire pager isn't real high on the list.

update-better jackstands and I checked the front using 4lo with the brakes on enough to slow the hubs, watching where the steel backing on the inner pad contacs the caliper casting. I wasn't able to see any movement on either side at different rpms. The drums are ordered, time will tell.

Well, I'm no guru but in my opinion you don't turn the rotors. When they're that bad replace them. I've never had any luck with turned rotors. I'm ordering some sloted one now with 198K on the OEM's. I do use the exhaust brake quit a bit though.

Goodluck Turbo--I have seen them used in the past on other HD vehicles and all we saw was additional stress cracks between the slots & holes. It all sounds good on paper.
