My 93 has 124000 on it and I think it is time for a brake job, for and afted. It has not bin tuched and have about 25% lining left.

What wood be the best for frunt, and what about the chang over

to 3inch and what must be changed. I tow a sports man trailer

that ways in at 15,850lb, so all the help I can get in the Sierras will be a big help.
 
124,000 without a brake job:eek: You must be living better than I am. I have an auto with a service bed and most of my driving is in town. I have burned up the brakes in the mountains towing a travel trailer. My new tow rig is a 5 speed with a BD brake. I tried the carbon jobs from Auto Zone and did not like them. My rotors got too hot an warped. Others on the board have had better luck with them. I use Bendix semi-metalics. The three inch shoes just go right on. I have been told that the trucks will stop better if you put the bigger 1 or 1 1/16 brake cly in the rear.
 
Most of my driving has been highway miles and I am very frugel

with my brakes. Srarted driving large trucks 40 years ago and we did not have varry good brakes so I lurned to save them. What was the problems with metalic brakes. You said the got hot and worped the roters. Long down grades or just stop and go in town. Mine are starting to shuder a little when I furst aply them so I think my roters will need turning or replacing.

As for the rear ,you say all I have to do is go to a 3 in shoe .

If I replace the cylinders what do I ask for 3/4 or one ton. Is there a part # that I can get from Dodge.

I don't recall where I picked up the following information regarding the brake conversion, but I hope this helps:-



2. 5" to 3" Rear Brake Conversion on D/W-250 Trucks



This is a simple conversion that can easily be done during a routine rear brake replacement. You will need a brake spring tool, a 2-9/16" axle nut socket, and a torque wrench. It would also be helpful to have access to a press to install the wheel seals. To do this however, the rear drums need to be turned to accommodate the larger shoes.

Rear axle seals (2 req. ): 28746

Wheel cylinder: 36057



Wheel cylinder: 36058

Torque Specs



Rear axle nut: 120-140 ft/lbs, then back

off 1/3 turn (120 degrees)

Axle shaft flange bolts: 70 ft/lbs



Rear differential cover: 35 ft/lbs

Rear wheel lug nuts:

1/2" studs: 85-115 ft/lbs

5/8" studs: 175-225 ft/lbs

5/8" studs (duals): 300-350

ft/lbs

Thank you A L K. that was what I needed, I will go to the Napa store and check this all out. If they can get the parts for me I will install this week end and report back.
 
Harlan, I had trouble from the carbon metalics. I have a heavy truck(3/4 ton that weighs 500 OVER MGVW with nothing in the bed) I do a lot of stop and go driving in town. I did not realize how hard my auto transmission is on brakes until I drove my "new" 84 with a NV4500. It takes a lot less to stop it. My rotors turned blue from the heat and warped the rotors. I have had good luck with the Bendix semi-metalics. mark
 
Thanks for the Spicer #'s AIK, to convert from the nylok nuts that I really never liked or trusted. I have about 15K on my 4 wheel brake job and I did machine everything and used Raybestos PG Plus shoes and pads (top line) and I never have a problem. I do heavy city stop & go with lots of hills and tow 8500# trailer once in a while. When things really get warmed up the rears will sing a bit if I drag the pedal but I can live with it.

I am with you regarding the nylon nut. The next time I pull the axle I will also switch to the double spicer nut system. I have 88,000 Km on my truck and the brakes still work well, but I do adjust the emergency brake periodically.
