 Hit a button on the keyboard, First message went ?????. Anyway my 99 Ram 2500 4x4 eats front pads at the rate of 16-17k. On third set at 34. 5k. Third set ceramic for brake dust control. Carquest premium. Anyway to apply more pressure to rear shoes? Done away with height proportioning valve as per tsb. Newer rams have 4 wheel disc, maybe an improvement. Disconnected rear abs as a test on a harder stop, rear end wanted to come around, reconnected abs. Front will lock up on harder stops and rainy days. Had a 97 and traded at 29k and never replaced them.

Just checked my brakes at 31,000 and looks like they are at about 70% remaining. I like exhaust brakes. I am just waiting for all the na-sayers that were bad mouthing Dodges brakes to bring up the subject again. I know who will be buying the beers that night!

CARDOC77, you're lucky!

My truck is like yours, but I'm happy when I get 7/8K out of the front pads!

:--)

Maybe driving like my granpa would increase the pad's life???:D

There is a fix for the premature front brake wear--replace the rear wheel cylinders with larger versions. I don't recall if Dodge has addressed it officially, but I know Raybestos has, and there's always EGR. :D

trent...

I could have written this post!! My '99 truck eats front pads too. My last set of the imfamous CM lasted only 10k miles and were noisy as hell. I am on my 4th set which I just installed this weekend at 58,000 miles..... I'm trying the new Raybestos Quiet Stops which are Ceramic. Came with new pin sleeves too!:D

Tell me more about this TSB regarding the height prop. valve???? TSB # ???

Wow, I have 68k on my truck and pull a 4k lbs trailor about 1000 miles a week and make deliverys all day long and still have just under 50% left on the original pads. I am not complaining!

Brake Pads

My 99 just hit 30,000 miles on the OD and the pads are still over 50%. I'm religious about adjusting the rear brakes manually during it's 5,000 mile oil change.

I have about 100K miles on my 99 and would still be on the second set of pads if I did the rear adjustments more often. I got about 42K out of the OEM's and about 55K out of the performance friction carbon metallics. I also had some trouble with the calipers hanging up and that drastically shortened the life of my pads. I could not wear out a set of brakes in 10K miles on a big money bet, something is definately wrong!!!

my 99 ctd 4x4 got about 20K out of the 1st set.

I'm up at 28K, havent checked them yet.

On my fords I've gotten about 10K-20K on the front pads with the same driving habits.

My lifted and worked yota with 33x12's got just about 12K everytime on the front pads.

My wife's Altima got 20K on her front pads, she wrapped the rotors badly and there were heat cracks. And she tells me I drive hard!

Here on LI, there is a LOT of stop and go to get anywhere. Our driving (my towing on LI) is really from one red light to another.

you can adjust the rear drums.

the owner's manual suggests to adjust them every oil change.

I adjust them about every other. . and I can feel the difference.

As you can see from my sig we have similar trucks. I have 66k on mine and have yet to change pads!:D

Yes I check them, I am getting close (about 40 %)I tow a camper and horse trailer up and down Washington passes all year long (no exhaust brake). Maybe I'm just lucky but that is a huge differance:eek:. You must have a major malfuction somewhere. Good luck!!

I get 15-20k per set of pads. I have tried different Raybestos pads with no change. The last time I changed the pads I had to replace the rotors also (85k). I wonder if that will make any difference?

voice of reason - do you have a part # on those replacement calipers?

Anybody know if the calipers on the new Rams will fit the 99 4x4? I hear they are dual cylinder calipers!

Me too. 41K on my truck and well over 1/2 pad left. Mostly city driving too. Maybe I downshift too much to slow down? Nah!!! :D

My 1996 3500 V-10 4x2 went 45,000 miles on the original pads pulling a 30' and then a 36' 5th wheel. The only reason they were changed then was a right front caliper stuck and burned the crap out of the pads, so I changed all front pads.

I have over 45k on my 2001 and a third of that is pulling a 12k 5er. Had my tires rotated the other day and they asked if I ever used my brakes. They said there is over 90% left. Got to love my e-brake. :D

Adjusting Rear Brakes ?

I started to adjust my rear brakes and I noticed that you can adjust them tighter but you can't seem to back them off because of the self adjuster riding on the star wheel. How don you all adjust them, with out almost locking the wheel ? I've got to get me a manual, SOON!!
