Stock clutch slipping in fourth and fifth at 160k miles, so figured hey time for a Southbend clutch. Pulled it apart -- front transmission seal leaking, stock clutch all oiled up. So, new rear seal, fresh ground flywheel, brand new SB clutch set-up, new transmission front seal. All back together tonight.

Ah, I can go to work tomorrow morning!

Take truck out for test ride -- clutch still slipping as bad as before. (4 letter word inserted here)

What else could be the problem? Hydraulic clutch set-up not retracting far enough? there's no adjustment on the thing.

Thanks for any advice --

John

slipping clutch

The new clutch will require a little break in to seat properly. Did you tell Peter at south bend your power level if over 400 hp it takes a good clutch to hold from 1800-2200 rpm. Give Peter a call he's a straight shooter. Tim

Thanks Tim

I don,t think I,m over 300 hp, if that much. This clutch is suppose to0 be good for at least 400hp. That,s why I,m a little disconcerted that it,s slipping worse than the oiled up, warn out stock clutch.

Thanks again for the help, John

The clutch needs to seat itself. It sould get better very quickly. Try and not over slip it to allow the clutch to seat. Call me as soon as possible. 1-800-988-4345

slipping clutch- crisis over

Thanks, guys, for all the response and especially thanks to Peter at Southbend. You are really on top of it -- I can't believe you were posting a response at 6:40 in the morning -- really great customer service! After three days under the truck and the clutch slipping I was more than a little panicked and Peter talked me through it. I drove it to work and back for 2 days and clutch felt stronger and stronger and so tonight stomped it hard at 50 mph in 5th gear and NO SLIP. Not only that, but the release and take up is oh so smooth like a brand new truck.

Thanks again!

John

Pete is the best.

I put in a South Bend and it worked great the first time out.

You could have put the throw out baring arm in 180 off.

Pull the slave cylinder off and see if you have ¼” play on that arm.

If not the arm is 180 off.

You can test the slave cylinder by pushing the rod in by hand and have the little woman

Step on the clutch pedal, it should move about 11/4”.

GOOD LUCK
