A friend of mine picked up a new 05 Monday nite. He drove it around for half an hour while his salesman finished up with another customer, took care of business, and left. He drove 15 miles up the road, gets off the freeway, and the engine light comes on and the engine stumbles at the end of the ramp. He drove a couple of miles to his girlfriend's house with it missing and running like poop. It sat in the driveway idling bad, so he drove it back to the dealer, and it ran fine.

The next day, the dealer calls and said whoever put fuel in it didn't put the cap on tight and they bled the fuel lines(?). They drove it around, said everything was fine. He picked it up, drove to the same place, had the same problem. Sooo, they sent a wrecker the next day and towed it.

He called off work today, so I don't know the latest. I do know he's pretty PO'd, not only about this issue but also about some things that were changed in the lease agreement that the salesman neglected to mention :-{}

The sad part is this is the first new vehicle he's had since I've known him. He was pretty excited about getting it, after shopping for a couple of months and deciding what to spend his money on. And then have a crappy experience like this.

Anyway, anyone had a similar problem? The techs at this place don't seem the sharpest. I've heard of a loose fuel cap throwing a code, but never affecting engine performance. And bleeding air out the lines, when it was running fine before?

Sorry for rambling on. I thought I could add another to the membership, but now I'm not so sure.

I fill my truck frequently while it is running. Having a loose cap should not matter one bit with a Diesel. The gas motors are the ones with all the emissions stuff related to vapor management in the tanks.

It's probably just a minor electronics glitch. Sometimes those are tough to find if intermittent.

I had a new gas truck lose the transmission controller on the drive home; after replacement it never had another problem again.

Most electronic components if faulty fail soon. After the break-in it's rare.

leaving the fuel cap off a diesel does not throw any codes there is not an evap system in a diesel. in a newer diesel there is only a cat for emissions. did the ck engine light come on if so ask what codes were in the ecm

We had a guy put gas in his truck and it did something similiar to this, but it did not die, just ran terrible

when I bought mine the sales man said that one of the lot teck put gas in a cummins 2 weeks before on one they sold they ended up replacing the hole motor

Like Tommygun and RChamberlain said ... I bet you that one of the "Tech" monkeys who "preped" your friends truck probably filled it up with a few gallons of gas and not diesel ... looks like your friend could be getting a new motor.

Even if they did fix it, I wouldn't want any part of that truck. I'd make them give me a NEW new one. It's kind of like going on a first date and having the girl get it on with another guy during the date. Even after it's over, you'll never get it out of your mind from that point on. I wouldn't just roll over and take it.

Make a stink, get a different truck, don't buy into the dealers BS. I wouldn't want it either, that is no way to start off, especially for what these things cost.

dude, sounds like it was filled up with some 87 octane! I bet it had a half tank or so of #2 in it, and when he bought it, the lot boy filled it up with regualr gasoline! Like someone else said above! I think he may be looking at a different truck my friend!

Now the finance manager has called him four times and says it is "imperative" that he goes there ASAP to sign something they missed. So the truck may not be his anyway. I think the service dept said something about APPS.

I'll echo MLimpert , i have never had the slightest change in rpm while filing up . You can drive with the gas cap off , no difference.

I agree 100%! I would take it back and demand a new "new" truck and I wouldn't be nice about it either unless I was treated extremely well.

Don't get me started about the time I bought a truck that was already sold to someone else... . ?????????

I don't think I'd be signing ANYTHING else if it would get me out of that purchase. I'd take that truck back and say, "No thanks. " Keep us posted on this one, I hope there is still time for your friend.
