I just took possision of my new 2004. 5 325/600 yesterday. I put about 160 miles on the truck so far and it has used about a quart of oil already, is this normal useage when the engine is being broke in. This is my first diesel and I really dont know what the oil consumption should be. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

I have had 3 CTD's since 1994 and have never added oil between changes. If your truck is using oil at that rate, I would look for an obvious leak first and then take it right back to the dealer now. Good luck.

Thanks to all that replyied to my question. Dummy me didn't read far enought into the owners manual, says to wait for at least 15 minutes before checking oil. I did recheck again and it was at the level when I picked up the truck. Thanks again guys.

Glad everything worked out for you:D . I have always been going to put a mark on the dipstick to show where it is full when it has just been shut down i. e when fueling up and the engine is hot.

Thats a great idea about marking the dip stick. I've learned alot from you guys for the little time that I've been a member with TDR.

I look foward to letting every one know how me and my truck bond together. Wife is a little P***** because I've been spending to much time with the truck. I told her Iwill make it up to her this weekend. Going to dinner 175 miles round trip. What us guys have to do to keep our ladys happy. EXCUISE TO DRIVE MY NEW 325/600.

Break In

I now have 3K mi. on new 04. 5, the mileage is not wonderful, but the horsepower has to come from somewhere. My concern is that the engine oil is jet black. My 03 has had as much as 5K between oil changes and no color to the oil whatsoever. The 03 now has a total of 24K and still shows no color at oil change. Was wondering if the coloring could be a result of the third injection event or possibly just that the rings haven't seated yet. Has anyone else seen this with their 04. 5?

The oil in my 03 turns black in a hurry. Just had an oil analysis done on the Pennzoil I got at a drive thru oil change (sorry, I was busy!) after 7000 mile on the oil the analysis said all was well and I could probably go 10k between changes!

Actually the break-in procedure on Cummins' website says to keep an eye on oil levels and oil pressure. I believe this would be because there's a possibility of using some oil at first.
