Do not baby it. I know it sounds weird but I drove my 05 like a mad man and Im doing the same to my new 06. Reason why is because it helps the rings seat better with the added load and cylinder pressure. After 1,500 miles I will change the oil and filter and get rid of the break in oil and put some fresh oil in and then run 5,000 mile oil change intervals until I hit 12-15,000mi then I will run Full Syn. Amsoil for the rest of its life at 5,000mi oil change intervals. For oil filters, well I use Donaldson, or Fleetguard. My father uses NAPA Gold filters on his with no problems at all. For your truck the NAPA filter PN is 7620. $9. 98 a pop. (I just did his oil today for him, thats how I know ;) ) I wont recomend on oil to use here, thats a flame war waiting to happen, just use an oil name you trust, just make its got a CI4+ rating :) Also, running Stanadyne, Howes, or Power Service in each tank of diesel helps things. It just helps add more lubricity to the diesel. Congrats and good luck on the new truck. And most of all, welcome to TDR. Oo.

Pretty much what I was told when I picked mine up. I had 140 miles on mine then I hooked my 6K lbs trailer to it and towed it around for about 60 miles since that's all it was to my buddies house and back. Let it get warm before you start to drive it hard cold engines don't like to be abused.

Roadtrip!

hook up to the heaviest load you can find and go on a road trip! i hooked up to my 8000# boat at 70 miles and drove to florida and back on vacation(3000miles). at 1500 miles when i got there empty i averaged 16. 9mpg empty. when i got home i changed the oil and fuel filter. truck just turned 6000 miles last nite and runs great. i havnt checked my milage lately but it's up there even running the winterblend fuel here in connecticut. good luck with the new truck!... james :D

I 3rd this. You want the ring and pinion to seat properly. I believe the manual says 500 miles. Then you can tow a subdivision down the road all you want. I also don't agree on the Diesel additive. i use to run Stanadyne religiously in my 01. Had 3 Vp44's if that gives any indication on how I derived to my feelings of additives. Also the manual does not recommend them at all. Just my 2 cents.

500 miles, change the diff fluid, the drive it like you sole it. Tow something if you can. Heat it up, pull hills with a load. Do something to make it sweat. You'll be thankful when the mpg increase!

I just towed 10500 lbs up through delaware on RT 13, and caught every light red! I ran it through the gears hard at every light, to keep cars from jumping in front of me. it runs a lot better now :) Plus transmission smothed out shifting as well.

I believe attention to how you drive the first few hundred miles will make a difference in how healthy the motor is down the road. A few dos and don'ts:

--No cruise control for first few hundred miles (point: always vary RPM)

--Avoid freeway trips the first couple hundred mi, but if you do, vary speed continually

--Give it a good workout after you get a couple hundred miles but don't abuse it.

--Don't totally baby it the first couple hundred miles, taking some quick runs accelerating to freeway speeds and back down are good.

--Don't let it idle, shut it off when you stop, and wind the motor up and down (ie 1000-2000rpm) while you wait at traffic lights (I did this, people probably thought I was a bit odd).

For the first tank I suggest urban cycle driving with lots of stop and go, that gives the components a variety of speed, load, RPM, etc. without hurting anything. Mix it up with jackrabbit starts, do not try to drive too efficiently. . . expect bad mileage on your first tank or two. I only got 15 then 17 on the first two tanks of my '03 2-wheel drive shortbed, which eventually became 20 on the highway at 80, 22 @ low 70s.
