Planning on a snowmobiling trip and my pickup is set to arrive anytime now, and we are planning on pulling the trailer with my pickup if it gets here in time, how important is it to get the first 500 miles on before towing? I don't expect the trailer to weigh 10000 pounds loaded but it will probably be over 7000. Thanks alot

I am not worried about the engine, but some guys were talking about making sure that you get the rear end gears and whatnot broke in good. I will probably have 2-300 miles but the time I hook up the trailer, will that be good enough?

IIRC the owners manual says no towing for the first 500 miles. And keep the speed under something like 50 mph for the first 500 miles when you do start towing.

Will you be okay if you don't follow these guidelines? Probably, but make no mistake there are people on here who have failed to follow this advice and ended up with differential problems. I doubt very much you'll hurt the engine or transmission, but the rear differential could be damaged. It's a crap shoot... just like anything else around here there are people who ignored the owners manual advice and everything's fine; there are other people who ignored it and had to have axles replaced.

You might read this.

If I'm spouting complete garbage about any of this, please let me know.
