Do I need AIR BAGS?

New 5th Wheel advice

I've read a few posts here about how to break in my new Cummins. Most state to work them hard (towing or payload) and not baby the new truck too much. Does DC or Cummins require minimum mileage before starting to work the truck or can you do it right out of the box?

My truck is scheduled (for the fourth time) for delivery 7 days before the first camping trip of the year (2 hour drive with 8000lb fifth wheel).

The owners guide has some very good guide lines on how to break in your new Cummins diesel. It says not to put any load on the truck for the first 1000 miles and to vary your speed and not to exceed 50 or 60 mph for the first 1000 miles. You may also want to call a factory rep on the Dodge 800 toll free number with your question on towing your 5er right away. I get much better information from them then from the saleman. Good luck and enjoy your new Dodge/Cummins. Grizzly

Any recomended break in period is going to be more for the benefit of the driveline, gears, and brakes, than for the engine. The Cummins is born ready, it takes the dodge a little while to catch up.

Thanks for the info since I don't have the owners manual to check on things. The truck is due to arrive on April 8th. Assuming it's on time I guess I could put 1000 miles on it in a week :D

I've heard lots of people recommend an engine (and possibly even driveline) oil change at 1000 miles miles or so... . any opinions on this or is it not really necessary.

baccagab:

Is your 6 speed the new G56 or an NVG?

Mlandis2: I don't know if it's the G56 or the NVG. It is the $440+/- option and said to be the Heavy Duty abd it is an 05. How do I know which is which? Grizzly

I ain't never bought a new cummins but the massey ferguson dealer told me the first 50 hours on my tractor should be hard working hours, so I hooked up a set of 5 bottom 16 inch plows and got her broke in right.

NV5600 is still an option? I was under the impression that once the switch was done (to the G56), the NV's were gone forever...

I ordered my truck on 12/27/04. That was the 1st or 2nd day the G-56 was available. Since then the only 6 spd is the G-56. NV5600's are still out there, and if you want one, you will see a $400 price for it on the sticker. I almost bought a Laraime with a NV5600 last week , but it had $3500 worth of stuff on it that I didn't want, and it wasn't a sport.

From the third gen forum a member drove a new G56 and indicates that reverse is down and left IE next to second,

Correct. G56 has reverse down and to the left and the NVG is up and to the right, I believe.

I have seen a few NVG's left on dealer lots while I'm waiting for my G56 but I don't mind being a test case for the new transmission..... I'm sure it will work fine.
