2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Breaker Breaker...CB ??'s

I screwed the Mic clip onto the front of the center console.

I mounted mine hanging from the bottom of the dash, just left of the a trans hump. I put a clip on the right side of the radio and the mic hooks there.

Well, this thread brings up a question that I would have for someone that really knows CB radios. The way I solved the mounting problem is I bought an "under the seat" mount Cobra radio. The hand set has all of the controls. There is a speaker in the handset, which is OK, but I have a small speaker plugged in that I just velcro to between the carpet and the plastic in the middle, just under the cup holders. I either lay the handset on the seat beside me, or sometimes just lay it in the ash tray.



So, my question is, just what is the advantage of the bigger body radios that I think most people have ? I don't think they put out more power ( I think most if not all cb's put out the same wattage).

I am NO expert but there are rules and regulations of what a CB is and how much power it puts out. I have been in traffic and had a trucker with a tuned radio key his mic and about blow me out of my seat. I even think some CB shops sell BOMBED radios and tune ups that really push the power. I think what you are trying to say is most CB radios out of the box are kind of close in power and performance. My best advice is you get what you pay for. There are some 200-300 dollar radios(ranger) that really make communication clear and clean.

Yes, I did mean "out of the box" CB's. For my purposes, I don't need a tuned CB like somje of the truckers use. I know you can get an amp that will blast a CB signal 30 miles or more. And if you are using single sideband, it really helps alot.

FCC limits the CB power to 4watts.

Some of the "big radios" are often 10m (export) radios operating on the 11m (CB) band. The rest are modded, or stock radios kicking an amp. Even a good Cobra or Uniden with a noise canceling/power mic gets out well. But, as with all of them, the antenna and coax will make or break a good rig. Go cheap, the performance WILL suffer!

I had one of those units (made by Cobra I recall) and found all the controls on the hand set, while neat at first, to be a REAL PITA after a while. I just like the individual controls on the larger units as they are more user friendly. When I got my Uniden Elite, Dave's CB Shop in Texas did a little "peak" job on it. Nothing illegal, just setting it up to proper specs. As with most manufactured items there is a range of acceptable settings, this just tweaked it properly. As to the Mic, I just hang it from the overhead cubbyhole with a simple clip. Can't recall where I got it from and might have come with the radio.
