Breakover spring R & R

Went to a buddies shop to braze up the pin the breakover spring rests on. I had only removed the 8mm allen head bolt on the indexed shaft, then answered a phone call walking away from the truck. He proceeded to remove the linkage etc from the shaft ignorant to the indexing etc! I had only glanced at it myself and put it back together where I thought it was previously. It started and runs fine, there is a little white smoke on start up now and minor black smoke at highway speeds when I put it to the floor. There was no smoke previously at all, from start up or at WOT under load. There was considerable play in the throttle pedal, the linkage and breakover etc. It has all been replaced now and adjusted to the best of my ability. I have replaced the throttle rod ends, breakover spring, bell crank bushings and rebuilt the throttle pedal assy. (NS1 now). I tried the linkage on the indexed shaft in both directions a notch or so also, wouldn't start one way and smoked more the other. Should I be concerned with anything here? Everything seems fine otherwise, put a couple hundred miles on it since w/out problems so far...

It sounds normal to me. Your worn linkage was not allowing full throttle so now you get more smoke. The puff on startup is normal.

Reading the references to the brackets original placement on the indexed shaft and where the shafts alignment were I expected a problem. After putting miles on it I was less concerned but still wondered. After fooling around with it again I turned the shaft until tension of the gov. spring could be felt then placed the bracket on the indexed shaft. It is right in there where I think it was originally. Also can someone tell me approx how far down their pedal goes before breakover is felt? I would guess approx. 80-90% to the floor then I feel it, there is definately difference in pedal feel when I get close to WOT. And, Thanks rlyons for the reply. I'll throw the new gov. spring in next...

The pedal travel and break-over point is directly relevent to the position of the governor stop screw. If you have nothing to stop the travel of the throttle lever assy (as some have done) then the breakover will never occur.



If you have the governor stop screw in it's OEM placement, then breakover will occur early and will be felt as the throttle pedle has farther to travel untill it reaches it's stop. This is when the brak-over sring swings into action. Pun intended.
