I have an occasional leak and the technician thinks it is from the breather tube (correct terminology?). Is this normal? Sometimes after parking there is no leak and other times I have the leak. It isn't a bad leak, just spots. Going back to the dlr today. Just wondering if anyone else has the same trouble.

Also, am considering a K&N replacement air filter. Not the whole K&N system, just the replacement filter. Any thoughts? Maybe increase my mileage a tad bit?

Engine breather tube? Axle breather tube? Which tube are you referring to? If it is the engine breather tube, I haven't seen, or remember seeing, any other posts about the breather tube leaving spots ot leaking.

As for the K&N, many here including myself would recommend something else like the AFE or Amsoil. It's your truck and your money so the decision is yours.

It's the engine breather tube. The technician just told me again that a few small drips are "normal. "

Occasional drip from the engine breather tube is normal. Your stock air filter can flow more air than your engine can use, change it regularly. :)

I agree that some minor drippage from the crankcase breather tube is normal.

Please, before you buy an aftermarket air filter, read this.

My own personal opinion FWIW, is I'd go with BHAF if I was going to modify the air intake or just remain stock air filter. That's just me though, I just don't care for the oil type air filters. :D

Whatever you do, stay away from a K&N, unless you're getting rid of your truck soon.

They do not filter very well at all.

I like my AFE. If you want a gauze filter, that's the one to get.

Ryan, I have read that air filter study. A few notes:

The DuraMax stock OEM air filter and intake (which the study is based on) is far superior to the Dodge/Cummins stock air filter in my opinion. The OEM dodge is a flat square and the OEM Chevy is a cylander filter like this... http://www.usdieselparts.com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=74096

That being said, I found our stock air system to be very restrictive just based on surface area. My old 96' Dodge/Cummins had a larger surface area box/filter than my 03' had and had much less HP. Bad engineering IMO. I noticed the new filter plugged up fast.

Since the intake is much different on the DuraMax and the Cummins, the data you present really doesn't amount to much for us Dodge/Cummins guys. But,Looking at the Data you presented on the DuraMax, I notice the AC Delco OEM filter is the most restrictive of all the filters in the study. It also filters out the most dirt & dust, but that is your trade off.

On the 4th graph down you will note that the AC Delco filter is the most restrictive, in the 7th graph down you will again note it is the most restrictive. In fact in the 10th graph down you will note that the only filter more restrictive than a new AC Delco filter, is a used AC Delco filter!

I agree with what you're saying, but I believe the value in that filer test is that it simply shows that we all have a choice: good flow or good filtration. The only option that offers both is the BHAF. Reuseable filters offer excellent flow but poor filtration. Paper filters offer excellent filtration but poor flow. The BHAF compensates for poor flow with large surface area.

That's my only reason for citing that study.

Think I'll just live with the breather tube leak. As far as the air filter goes I removed the K&N and replaced it with a new stock air filter. Gives me more peace of mind. Does the stock filter have some type of "foam" glued to the bottom? It appears that this "foam" is supposed to stay there. First time I've seen the air filter.

My first stock filter that came on the truck "new" did not have the added foam filter glued on to it. When I replaced the original filter at 12K miles the replacement stock one I purchased at a Dodge dealership did have the foam piece glued on. Also noticed the original filter and replacement filter where made in different locations one Mexico other Great Britian.
