Bright Green Diesel Fuel

I've been running diesel for many years now and I've seen clear, gold pink and red fuel, but I've just drained the fuel filter in my sisters Liberty and its bright green like Freon dye. The reason I ask is because I had to haul it home since it died on here just after filling up at a Speedway. She said it took about 5 minute to pump 1. 5 gal. That's all she pumped.



Anybody ever seen this?

Normal - Bright green dye has been used to distinguish that it is ULSD diesel. Noticed it quite a bit when ULSD first came out. Some places don't use so much dye anymore.

Was the water in fuel or check engine light on? If it took that long to pump that little bit of fuel, it sounds like she was sucking from the bottom of the station's tank. May have gotten about 1. 5 gal of sludge/water. If it did not make it to the fuel filter, it could have stopped up the screen or pump in the tank...

Do you get any fuel when you pump the primer with the bleeder screw loose?

Yup. I've gotten that green fuel too.

Looks a lot like full strength antifreeze dont it?

The brightest green neon looking diesel I have seen has been Biodiesel.

I worked as an operator in a crude distillation plant. I have seen the diesel cut many different colors over the years I worked in that unit. I saw usually a clear yellow color. But depending upon the crude I have seen green, clear, orange, and even blue. This was before the sulfur and nitrogen compounds were removed. The blue diesel was at a time when a very low sulfur content crude was being processed.
Green Diesel would usually make me think of algae though. Check the fuel filters. A lot of the Biodiesel that I have seen has been orange-yellow, almost like the Cactus Cooler soda pop.

when i filled up on B20 the first time, it scared the crap out of me. the color was bright koolaid orange. . at work i have seen bright green along with bright blue fuel. i get to see purple too if a locomotive comes in with an almost empty tank of red fuel and we top up with blue. grade school art class at work there. .

Some refiners dye their fuel certain colors. That way if you call Unocal (or some other refiner) and tell them that their fuel screwed up your engine they can pull a sample and tell by the color.



Chevron's Diesel is not diesel. It is fuel oil and is clear.
