Towing with edge ez

Towing Dilemma

Well, "Great White" is pretty well all finished up on the mods...

1. Carter 4600 pusher pump

2. Edge Comp

3. Geno's "A" pillar 2 guage cluster, Westach boost/EGT, westach fuel pressure.

Stock fuel pressures at the VP44 were 15 at idle, around 12 at cruise, 9 at WOT. After the 4600 pusher install, 25 psi idle, 21 cruise (2000 rpm, 70 mph), and 16 psi WOT. I bit the bullet, and installed a relay keyed by the stock pump to then apply separate 12 volts to the 4600 - running the 4600 straight pushed as high as 10 psi THRU the stock pump, making it hard to start the engine!

Bought my own Carter 4600 from Jegs for $72, and a Radio Shack 12 volt relay with 15 amp contacts for $8 - and than was it! No need for a kit at nearly double the price... . ;)

The Comp does NOT have the pump wire connected yet, running on level 1, sub 3 - feels real strong, will know more after a few more miles - max boost running empty looks like 28 psi, EGT's under the same conditions look like 1100 - a bit high, will play around with the sub menu to see if a bit more fuel will lower EGT...

First impressions are, it seems as tho I have about the same power/accelleration now in 5th that I have in 4th with the Comp off - should pull our 5er noticeably better in the hills - will know in about 3 weeks... And will probably have the pump wire connected by then as well... As it is, when ya hit the GO pedal, things start happening REAL fast!;) :D :D

Enjoying that Comp Gary? :D While towing on 1x2, I didn't really see anything over 900 on my EGT's until I got on it to pass some people! :D The most it hit was 1200 (passing semi up slight hill). Good to see all your goodies are going in well! Have fun and a great weekend! I'm going camping again! :D

I was sorta surprised to see my EGT climb so quickly to 1100 - especially when running the unloaded truck - but perhaps part of that is because I haven't yet connected the pump wire, and not running the Comp at it's ideal operating point. That temp was about the max on my old truck when pulling hard up in the Sierras! I haven't yet tried the same hard accelleration with the Comp off for a direct comparison - probably try that later this morning on my way into town to get the mail...

One step at a time. . ;) :D

Mike, still running stock injectors - I really think the Comp alone will give me all the power I could possibly, reasonably want - I can only go so fast even UPHILL, before road conditions and other traffic gets to be a problem - so don't see bigger injectos on the horizon...

Give it time

Kool; I just got back from a trip with a buddy of mine all over the west. He has GM with a Allisson. Ever timem we filled up with the same miliage he got about 1MPH beter than me. He was pulling 2000K less that me but oh well?

Wait til he hooks up the pump wire, 1100* on the egt guage is nothing. I think the term I have herd is acceptable while pulling a full load. You may only want to go so fast but lets just get there quickly:eek:

ACTUALLY, I had done a bunch of the "normal" power upgrades on my '91 - and it pulled our 5th wheel VERY well in the Sierras and similar grades - but jeeze, 65 mph is about as fast as ya really want to go in those situations - if not for speed limits, then for curves and other traffic... These trucks, especially when towing a top-heavy RV aren't very similar to a Porsche Speedster in cornering ability - and NOT much personal satisfaction gloating about the Ford you passed back down the grade, as HE passes YOU as you lay somewhere down the ravine where ya just rolled yer rig... :p ;) :D

Yeah - it's nice to get UP TO 65 mph real fast - but ABOVE that speed, *I* am MORE than happy to let anyone able, to just go on around and past me!;) :D

Gary, what injectors did you have in your old truck--PWs or Lucas?

Ummm...

Gary, I realize that the current unwritten TDR policy seems to be to try to bury anything even remotely relating to first gens, but DAMN, for you to flip so quickly--I mean, *DAMN*!! That's just cold, man...

;)

For those who aren't catching on, when I mention "old truck" in the quote above, I'm referring to Gary's FIRST GEN TRUCK--Gary was on the first gen forum for quite a while with his '91, and in fact INSPIRED me with details of his Frantz bypass engine oil filter, and his US Gear overdrive, both of which were installed in his FIRST GEN TRUCK! ;)

I hope this is taken in the spirit it's intended... ;)

So Gary, I realize you don't have aftermarket injectors in your new truck, but what injectors did you have in your FIRST GEN? :D

HI Mike - nice to hear from you!

The "old truck" still had stock injectors - with the other mods done to it, I was already at the ragged edge of what the torque converter could handle, and was already losing too much power to slippage.

Yeah, the switch DID come pretty fast - I've been pretty sensitive to the substantial changes in technology, styling and MUCH cost-cutting going on at DC - and figured that the '02 models MIGHT be the last/best of the trucks *I* was particularly interested in - and then I made the mistake of wandering over to the local dealership where they just happened to have the very truck I was most interested in... :D :D

It now sits in my garage...

BUT, it has a VERY tough act to follow - that '91 was an absolute workhorse - and dead reliable and trouble-free - I'll be happily surprised if the new one can do as well in the next 11 years as did the old one...
