BriteBox and VA state law

Well, I just failed my state inspection because my fog lights stayed on with my high beam. So now I have to go back, disconnect the brite box and get re-inspected.

grrr. just word to the wise, for you lucky folks who live in Virginia.

Its actually a federal law. Not all inspectors actually check it. You might be able to just pull the Brite Box fuse I'm not sure. Ken Irwin

someone without factory fog lights might be able to get away with it, i don't have them on either truck and have been thinking of getting a box for each due to all the deer collisions, the county i live in leads the state of Va. for deer collisions, that was told to me by my ins. man after a 7pt buck hit my dad and totalled the taurus... I know i have some issues getting the 92 inspected after i bought it, mechanical parts steering, light lenses ect, as for low or high beam they checked on the lights on low beam. . and believe it or not they wouldn't pass my inspection due to the truck not having the tag light lenses over the lights and both lights were working. Each place is different, most worry about brakes, and the normal functioning lights. . others could care less as to them it was working when they inspected it so its no skin off their rears.

Also i found out any additional lights added to any vehicle in the state of Va. must be working at all times regardless if they are factory or installed by you ie. . extra marker lights, etc...

Fog Lights

I have the Brite Box with Fogzilla. They work great. No hassle with the law.



There is no provision in Oregon law prohibiting having high beam and fog lights on at the same time. They just have to be dimmed when your lights SHOULD BE dimmed. Here is a direct quote from the Oregon driver's manual.



Fog Lights



A vehicle may be equipped with 2 fog lights. The lights may be white or amber. The beam must strike the road not more than 75 feet ahead of the vehicle on which it is mounted. These lights are illegal to have in operation at times when you are required to dim your headlights.



I would imagine that most states are that way. Who cares what lights are on your truck as long as they are dimmed when necessary?

Here IN Pa. we have State Inspection

Some Inspector's like to dismantle your truck or car and some think If your buggy makes It there that good enough for them. I always check mine over before I take It In for a check up. I let them tear It apart. :-laf I use to be one and It for safety. I guess I was tough. There lives depends on It,and so did mine.

Wish we had a law here in Georgia about the fogs being off under conditions lights should be dimed. Every fool with fogs here drive with them as soon as a hint of dim light and leave them on ALL the time.

Even for out of state trips I am glad I pulled the fogs in favor of an aux high beam. They get far more use but proly wouldn't do it if i was in heavy fog all the time.

I give up. Big Bro has too much time on his hands. I'm one of "those guys" that drives with fog lights on a lot. The factory fog lights suck in fog, but they're great at lighting up the white line. I keep mine adjusted down quite a ways so I don't tic people off. Fog light that light up as high or higher than dims should be busted out with a hammer

Who cares what lights are on your truck as long as they are dimmed when necessary?

Won't get into individual State law, because it IS a federal law that the fogs are off when the high beam is on. Ran into the same thing on a motorcycle years ago.

TugboatPhil took me to a place in Floyd Co. that passed my truck without even looking at anything. I've got 5% tint all around (on top of factory) including a sun strip and no muffler. The "inspector" asked if it ran and if it stopped, then proceeded to fill out the decal. I was in and out in 5 minutes. Its worth the 5 hour drive for me now that I have moved to NOVA.

Fog lights are not mandatory in Virgina, just crawl under your bumper and remove the bulbs from the fogs until after your inspection... MUCH easier than disconnecting your brite-box and risk breaking the sensitive plastic connectors.

I am not sure on private vehicles in your state,but when I was running a fleet the comercial vehicles had to have all the lights working. If it was on the vehicle it had to work. If you did not want to fix it the chp would tell you to remove it

Put those stick-on covers on them that are used for off road lights. Tell them they are a million candlepower so you keep them covered on the road. They should have no business inspecting them.

Ya they are called CHP. When you get pulled over by them they can give you a safety inspection. All commercial vehicles are safety inspected too

Sooooo TRUE, When I was a kid growing up in central californina the CHP would set up roadside inspection points, if they picked you, you HAD to stop and be inspected. This was in the 50's and early 60's I believe, after the budget went to hell they stopped. But the CHP can give anyone, anytime an inspection

Virginia has a few rules for lights They MUST work in accordance with the OEm spec's. That said... you CAN cover "other" lights and they are NOT inspected. Yes... when switching to HIGH BEAM the FOG LIGHTS must turn off... When useing OEM switching Sorry if this makes little sense it is Virginia. I've had no problems over the years with my fogs and lightbar here in VA If you have a question fell free to call
