I think I did some major damage last night. I have been fighting the dreaded "death wobble" and have a lukes link ordered for my track bar which is pretty loose. So yesterday I pick up my kid and get on the freeway and I am going through 3rd gear and suddenly the death wobble rears its ugly head. I quickly back out of it and pull over. Now the transmission won't shift into any gear but 4th (its a nv4500 spd. I take off in 4th and drive it that way all the way home (35 miles). The gear shifter dancing all over the place. I got it in the driveway and was able to get it into all of the gears but third. None of the gears were very smooth and I had to pretty much jam it into 4th. I opened the top of the transmission and found tiny plastic pieces all over. The death wobble must have slammed the shifter side to side so hard that it damaged the transmission. Now I need to get it out to look at it. What do you think is wrong? Could it be synchros? The shifter was bouncing all over the place in 4th on the drive.

Shifter

check the plastic bushing on the end of the shifter if that was broken it would let the shifter move around alot and be hard to shift

WHAT PLASTIC BUSHING! Maybe thats the problem. I will double check, but I did not see any bushing. Does the bushing go around the end of the shifter where it engages the shift arms in the transmission? If so, it's missing. Anybody know where I can get this part locally? I am in Central Cal and willing to drive to get it. If this fixes it, I owe you a beer.

Steve

Edit to Forrest,

Nope, I haven't done that yet but maybe someday. I know it has a whoole bunch of power, I'm just trying to keep the driveline together.

The dealer ordered the wrong dang part and couldn't find it in his manual. Dieseldemon, do you happen to know what the part number is or where I can get it? By the way, my clutch is still holding up good.

plastic bushing

Burner did you get the right # for the plastic bushing if not I will get it and post sorry about the long wait I have not been on the internet

Plastic Bushing ?

Burner the 5 spd does not have the plastic bushing in the shifter

I pulled a 99 apart today and the bottom is the same as the 94 to 98 you may have broken a shift fork I dont know without looking at it

I just picked up the 3 piece platic pads that go on the 5th/reverse arm. I don't know for sure if I need them but if I get this thing apart, I will be able to get them in. The transmission won't shift all the way into 3 rd I can get the rest of the gears ok. Anybody ever had this before? Also does anyone know if the pads missing on the 5th/reverse fork would cause shifting problems in 3rd? I am going to work on it tomorrow and im looking for advise. Thanks

Dieseldemon, thanks for checking for the pads on the transmission you were working on. I am looking for advice on what can be causing this hard shift problem. IT's kind of like the shifter is being hung up from going all the way into third. The other gears are ok and I do have some plastic pieces in the oil.

Got the transmission out today and took it apart. It looks like the synchro is messed up on 3rd gear. Since it has 140K miles on it, I will probably get it rebuilt by a reputable shop somewhere. Anyone know of one locally that they recommend? I am in Manteca Ca. If I can't find anyone local, I was thinking of shipping it to Standard Transmission in Texas or maybe using Phoenix Remanufactured transmissions. Has anyone had any luck with these outfits?

Finally got some time to work on my truck. Armed with a new set of synchros and bearings from standard transmission, I tore down the transmission to do the rebuild. After completing the idler and countershaft, I started to pull all of the components off of the removed main shaft and found that the main shaft was broken 3/4 of the way around just in front of the 3rd gear race. Yikes. A call this morning to standard has a new part on the way. The torque of these trucks is enormous. I am lucky that I didn't break it all the way or it would have been total carnage.
