Noticed oil on the tailgate only to find a small hole in the diff cover, pulled the cover to find 2 teeth on the pinion broke off. Does anyone know the Dana 70 well? Can I just buy a ring and pinion and throw them in?

Thanks, Joe

1995 dodge 2500 diesel automatic Not sure the gear ratio- it does 70MPH at the rev limiter in 3rd so my friends say 3:54?

The short answer is NO. Assuming there's no other damage the pinion has to be shimmed to mesh properly with the ring. Rebuilding a diff is a special skill.

There's a tab on the diff cover with the gear ratio. It'll be 3. 55 or 4. 11.

Rebuilding them isn't that hard if you have decent mechanical aptitude. You do need some prussian blue dye and a dial indicator. I've done a handful and all but one were in specs by matching new shims with the old ones. Getting the carrier bearings off can be a bear. I've had to cut them nearly off with a cut off wheel then pop them with a chisel. Do some web research to get familiar and who you get the gears from can be a lot of help. I was scared to death on my first one and it has over 100k on it and still going strong. Take your time and pay attention and you can save a bundle. Good luck.
