Holy #$%*&! Man how in the world did that happen? What other damage did it do other then the cam gear? No time like the present for a bombed cam! :-laf

PS I se your motor is red. Is it a marine motor or did you paint it at one time?

I painted it so it looked like a marine engine :D (good eye)

all 12 rods are bent, the cover is eh,and the case is cracked

I dont know what happend. it wasnt the KDP i fixed that so maybe there was a crack in the gear and over time... . I dont know

Oh BTW it does have a piers hot cam. but ill see what else is out there depending on what the damage to my wallet is :-laf

How was the gear installed on the cam? Looking at the gear it looks like it was warmed up with a torch or over baked in the oven. Believe me your not the only one with a streak of bad luck. I feel your pain. Hope you have it up and running soon. Good luck!

I can't tell for sure from the pictures. Did a gear case screw fall out? I've heard of broken cam gears from that.

I didnt pull the head yet so i dont know about the valves and tappets (im praying)

all the case screws were in, nothing seemed to be missing

BPonci you think they heated up the gear to much when it was pressed on??

Its not a factory cam so.....

Or improperly heated. One or the other would be my guess.

When you install a cam gear you have to bake it at a certin temp for a certin amount of time. You then put luberplate 105 on the cam and slip the gear on by hand. (with protective gloves) There is no pressing on needed if done correctly. The only pressing is the removeal of the gear.

I think i know why it broke

last week when i did my valve lash my buddy left the barring tool in the block, I went to start the engine and it stopped it didnt start. the rachet went against the frame so thats probobly what did it.

Not likely. The barring tool engages the ring gear. So does the starter. No strain on the valve train at all.

I agree that the barring tool wouldn't have done it. What broke the teeth on the vacuum pump gear? Sure looks like something went through it to me. Are you sure all the bolts are accounted for? I'd be fishing with a magnet and see what you can find in the oil pan.

I've seen an engine stop really hard when a starter gear fell off and jammed between the torque convertor and the bell housing. No damage from that. A hard stop would not have sent a chunk through any moving gears and cause teeth to get knocked out. Everything would have stopped turning by that time. Like Kim says, carefully account for all the gear case screws. That sure looks like what happened.

I could see the barring tool breaking teeth on the ring gear maybe, but the sudden stop shouldn't have had that effect on the front gear train. I can't tell from the picture if the discoloring on the cam gear is oil or from heating. I believe Joe Donnely or someone had cautioned against removing the cam gear (vrs. pulling the cam out) when doing the KDP repair due to the issue of having to heat the cam gear to reinstall. Seems as if done incorrectly, they tend to break. Don't know that that is what happened here or not. It sure looks to me like something went through the gears.
