Well, our HO has developed a knock, the kind of sound that a gasoline engine developes when a rod is going from lack of oil.

I changed the fuel filter, oil to no avail, and stopped by the dealership just now and asked them to look, preliminary guess/diagnose. . and they said have you changed your oil, well we had it changed by the dealership @ 2200, and then changed ourselves at 10098. Have you checked the air filter. He checked it an even though the filter minder said only down 35%, he took it out and the bottom looked very dirty on the bottom.

He said the clogged air filter may have caused what sounds like the last/back piston to develop a problem knock.

He said it could also be an injector.

Anyone got any ideas about the credibility of these estimates/preliminary diagnosis?

any comments?

We are very very nervous that they may not cover this under warranty.

Thanks in advance

If it sounds like the previous 24v knock, but only on one cylinder its most likely a broken oil j-jet.

ONLY SEEN A FEW, happened on early trucks.

I'm not a mechanic but I think a bad injector is a strong possibility. Had a friend with a new Duramax that sounded like it had a rod knocking, ended up replacing two injectors.

Don't worry! You still have almost 90,000 miles left on your warranty! They (dealers) will try ANYTHING to try to get out of covering you. Maybe this is why they get such a bad rap. It flames me.

Well, I wouldn't worry too much. Personally, I suspect it's a sticking injector. Me (and a couple others here, I forget who) have experienced an intermittent knock. I believe it could be caused by any of three things:

1. A load of poor quality fuel.

2. Stuck injector pintle.

3. Pilot injection doing something goofy.

Never heard the broken J-jet problem, so I can't comment on whether that might be the case. I'm no mechanic, but I recommend just continuing to drive it normally and see if the knock disappears. Give it a good 1000 miles before deciding it's something that really has gone bad. And don't worry about the warranty... the dealer was probably just covering his bases, and I'm certain they would cover an engine problem with such low mileage.

When (if ever) did you change out the fuel filter? If you never have, you might want to do it now. Let the dealer do it, so if it is an injector problem down the road they can't blame you for screwing something up when you changed the fuel filter.

As indicated above I changed the fuel filter and oil and oil filter all at 10098 miles just in case the fuel filter was the problem. It was quite dark.

Oops, sorry... when I was typing I remembered the oil filter was replaced but forgot about the fuel filter.

I looked at this post 10 min. ago and had to come back.....

Your comment about the air filter gives me fits..... If you think through the process... there can't be any pulses in the intake manifold on the boost side of the turbo that could cause an air flow problem to one cylinder... . there is so much volume in the air system... ... on the postive side of the turbo... . that I just can't understand there could be pulse problems... I've seen this in cars were there was a vacuum leak and that air couldn't take on fuel... that cylinder is lean... . but not on a diesel... . where is this guy coming from... .

I have seen flow problems on diesels that don't have turbos...

Just my thoughts... .

Ouch! I hate to think what a high-pressure pump goes for on an ISBe...

I guess the good part is that you don't have to worry about timing it when you install it... . since all it does is produce the high pressure for the injectors - then the injectors fire off when they are told by the ECM.

I don't know what it went for, but it took a few days to come in. I got a chance to see the front of the engine torn down and it surely is an impressive piece of work. :--)

air filter

That statement that tech makes about the air filter being dirty and causing this and that. The 03 manual makes the statement that the air filter is to never be checked under normal conditions (35% is not in the red). "RELY ON THE FILTER MINDER TO TELL YOU WHEN TO CHANGE FILTER" (everybody does not know about the weaker filter minder spring in the earlier models). A little bit of sarcasm here. If you have the old style filter minder with weaker spring thats DC's problem the way I see it, as well as the new style filter minder if it's not working right also. IMO! I hate these dam games they play with you, well you did'nt do this, or you did'nt do that. I don't like the fact that some people are more than capable of doing there own service on there trucks that some dealerships make you feel obligated to them for service, or your warranty won't be any good. That's BS to me. I do my own service, and keep records on everything I purchase for the CTD, and record everything, but it still might not hold up in there so called kangaroo court system. DC is not the only one's some have problems with, I had problems with a Chevy dealership one time. Sorry had to vent a little. :D

The first CTD I had was a 94 w/auto and the transmission had been rebuilt just before I bought it. After a few weeks I noticed that I heard a lot more "knocking" going on then I used to. I checked my oil right away and all was fine... . I took it to my mechanic and he couldn't find a thing out of the ordinary till he checked the trans fluid and found it to be totally dry! This was only a few weeks after it was rebuilt by another mechanic, who said that for some reason the fluid was gone and the converter or something was knocking. I had the transmission guy fix it and the next day traded it for a 96' with a 5spd.
