Broken ashtray?

I did a search with no luck- I use my tray for small trash etc, seems to be broken- will not stay closed or if it does, it releases within a mile or so. Is there some little plastic catch that broke off? Is there an easy/cheap fix?

The ash tray on my 03 does this as well. There is no plastic clip to break. If you dont push it in far enough it will not close. It's almost like they have some sort of detent latch mechanism. I have to get a little rough with mine once in awhile, but it does close. I think they get wore out quick if you keep to much change or junk in them. The latch wasn't made to hold it shut with a lot weight in it.

Pull it out and clean behind it

The entire assembly (not just the liner) can be removed and many times the trash gets caught in the mechanism causing it to not remain closed. I've removed mine by taking out the liner and then slowly and lightly pushing out and down to pop it from the IP. Don't push too hard as the plastic can break.

There is a gear ratchet mechanism on the upper side of the enclosure (I had to actually see it to understand how it worked - pretty slick mechanism, just cheap implementation). This is actuated via a small plastic clip. THe clip on mine broke, and I had to purchase a new enclosure - about 40 bucks for it.

Is the mechanism open to getting outside debris in it? maybe they get dust built up in them causing them not to latch properly. Thats probably why when I close it firmly it works.

yeah, it looked as though some debris could get in there, there's a slot in the top that the actuator arm rides in.

Mine did that and it ended up being errant change and a fuel cap key behind the tray.

No cap, just key.

It was the key for my locking gas cap.

For those that keep loose change in the ashtray, sometimes a few coins will fall back behind the ashtray and keep it from staying closed. The entire ashtray assembly on the 03-05 will pop out and you can clean behind it.
