I was checking my filter minder a little while ago, and I noticed the two rear most exhaust manifold studs are broken. I'm not sure what to do. It does not seem to be leaking, but I don't want to leave it like this. I now these studs are going to be a high grade bolt, ie very hard to get out! Any suggestions? Truck is no longer under warranty.

Thanks guys,

Steve:confused:

Get my yz450 on monday!Oo. :) :)

Are you sure they're not bolts that fell out?

I think there's a TSB to install retaining straps across the heads of the bolts as this was a common problem.

Studs fell out

Thanks shovelhead,

just went out and checked, and sure enough studs are missing! I'll take care of it tommorrow!

Warranty

Pit Bull,

I'm the second owner of the truck, and I'm at 65k, If the warranty transfers, I'm not aware of it. Would be great if it did.

Steve you are covered for another 35K miles. Have the dealer fix it. You might need a new manifold.

ah, the exhaust bolt warranty

when my grandfather still owned my truck, he noticed that the exhaust bolts were loose, and ended up loosing one. This was before the TSB came out, but he took it into the dealer anyway. Well, the dealer CHARGED him $150 for parts/labor. He claimed the engine warranty, and the dealer told him that the exhaust was not covered... . G'Pa told him to take the exhaust off and try to run the damn pickup w/o it :D... the guy just looked at him.

About five months later I found the TDR, and started my love of the Cummins... . this was when everything came together, and I sent G'Pa back into the dealer armed w/ info... . they still said no, so he fired off a letter to DC about it... . DC also came back with a letter that stated the exhaust wasn't covered under the 100,000 mile warranty, but "in a show of good will towards a valued customer, we will re-imburse you for the cost of fixing the problem you encountered". LOL. He got paid back, but not in the right way. I now own the truck, and my warranty might as well be gone. . lol. G'Pa bought a new '02, and is just as happy with it as he was with mine... although he did complain about getting 12 MPG while towing his trailer to Wyoming... told him to throw an EZ on there, but he says it's already got too much power!!! :D :D

Sorry for rambling. Later, Josh.

Josh,

These are covered under a TSB and also covered under the FEDERAL emissions warranty!

Without these bolts the manifold will leak harmful NOx emssions into our atmosphere.

Dont pay for the fix, demand it be fixed under warranty, and read your warranty card/book located in the glove box.

Good luck!

thanks

Justin,

Thanks for the info, but it's already been done, and he did get payed back for it. This happened over a year ago, and long before the TSB came out... when I found the TDR and started looking at stuff, he told me he had had it done, at which point I remembered the TSB and told him about it. That's when he wrote the letter. It all worked out, but for the wrong reason.

Thanks again, Josh.
