broken fuel filter cap

Has anybody broken the cheap plastic fuel filter cap trying to remove it

not yet, but if i do, i have my original cap sitting in the basement [i have one of them "mopar" locking caps on it... ]

Went to the locking cap,no problems yet,although I was checking the gasket seating area for a good pattern and I noticed frost accumulation in the filler neck?????? I was checking out the gasket because I don't like how water sits in the plastic housing ater a wash. Might have to drill a hole in there to prevent raw water from sloshing up on the gasket area. Have'nt noticed any water in the filter when I do the water drain on it , and was wandering if anyone was using a product that I have used when I was in Uncle Sams Navy,It was called Water cut paste ( I think). You could aplly it to a tape or rod and it would turn from brown to a hot orange or pink if it came in contact with water ! How else would we tell if the fuel tank has water ? J Hardwick , my apologies if this is a hijack, It seems closely related .

JHardwick, are you talking about the "filler" cap or the cap on the "filter" housing!! Based on responses here Im or people cant read correctly!

There is actually a TSB on this for the 2nd gens - seems like a 12" ratchet fits in the recess quite nicely, but is almost a certain way to break the cap!

I'm talking about the "filter" cap, yes the cheap plastic cap on the fuel filter housing. Maybe I wasn't clear in my post.



I'm kicking around the idea of a billet piece like the filter socket that seemed to be a hit over in the accessories forum.



What got me thinking was a buddy of mine who has an F550, 6. 0. He drooled over the sockets I made for you guys and showed me the cheap cap over the drop in oil filter on his Furd. He thought for sure he was gonna break it the first time he changed the oil. I told him I could do a billet cap and will check out the possibility of that.



This all led to me thinking about the cheap plastic cap over the fuel filter canister on our trucks.



what do y'all think?

If you put a ratchet extension in that sq hole, you will probably break it. If I remember right a 1 1/8 socket fits the nut part of it. That will get it right off.

There was a previous post by another member that had problems with keeping his engine running only to find out this cap was cracked and sucking air.



My 03 3500 does not have the 1/2" square recess for a ratchet/extension. (has a round hole) You have to use a large socket to remove the cap. I heard they changed from the recess because too many were breaking.

Large adjustable open-end wrench did the job just fine... no need for socket wrench.

I'm talking about a billet/anodized cap to replace the plastic cap, not remove the plastic cap.

Jeff, my vote is to make one. That would sure look nice when you open the hood. Count me in if you decide to do it.

No Problem w/ Cover

I haven't had any problems with the cover. Remember, it only tightens to 14lbs tq. Newer caps don't have a 1/2" sq in the middle anymore, just a round hole.



I can't remembe exactly the size socket (1. 25" maybe). I use the socket and no problems.



Be careful when putting it back on: It snap down then carefull ensure it doesn't start to crossthread. Hand tightne, then torque it to 14 ft lbs.

Count me in. Just my luck I would pick up a load of fuel and have to change the filter on the road on a three day weekend out in the middle of nowhere and have the cap break or crack. Even though I have the socket and this probable would not happen, old Murphy's law has a way of traveling with me. Let me know if you do make them. Larry
